What the Microsoft Copilot Bounty Program pays
The current Microsoft Copilot Bounty page lists awards from $250 to $30,000 USD for qualifying submissions. The amount depends on the demonstrated security impact and Microsoft’s assessment. A bug report, unexpected AI response or general product issue does not automatically qualify for payment.

Microsoft says eligible findings may include vulnerabilities in third-party and open-source components included in the service, but the report still must show a qualifying security impact on the specified Copilot service. Researchers should check the live program page for exact scope and award criteria before testing; the published range alone does not identify which issue earns which amount.
What kinds of findings qualify?
The key distinction is security impact: researchers need to demonstrate a vulnerability that affects a service covered by the program, not merely point out undesirable model behavior. The precise eligible targets and rules are defined by Microsoft’s current Copilot Bounty scope, which can change.

- In-scope service: The affected product or component must fall within the program’s specified scope.
- Demonstrated impact: The report must explain and substantiate a qualifying security consequence for that service.
- Included dependencies: Third-party or open-source components can be eligible when included in the service and when the finding meets Microsoft’s impact requirements.
How to submit a report responsibly
- Read the current Copilot Bounty scope. Start with Microsoft’s program page and confirm that the target is covered before testing.
- Review the governing terms. Follow the linked bounty terms and conditions, legal safe-harbor language, rules of engagement, coordinated vulnerability disclosure process and bounty guidelines.
- Document the security impact. Provide a clear, reproducible account of the vulnerability and its effect on the specified service, while staying within the rules of engagement.
- Submit through Microsoft’s stated reporting route. Use the reporting instructions on the program page and provide enough detail for Microsoft to assess scope and impact.
Safe harbor and coordinated disclosure guidance are not permission to test anything in any way; the program’s scope and rules still govern researcher activity. Do not exceed authorized testing or publicly disclose a finding outside the applicable disclosure process.
How the Copilot program compares with Zero Day Quest
Microsoft’s standing Copilot bounty and Zero Day Quest are related opportunities, but they differ in scope and timing. Zero Day Quest is an event-based initiative rather than a replacement for the Copilot program.

Microsoft announced Zero Day Quest on August 4, 2025, with up to $5 million in total awards and a 50% multiplier for qualifying critical-severity vulnerabilities and high-impact scenarios. Its announcement describes the total opportunity across eligible research, not a guaranteed payment to an individual researcher. These figures describe Microsoft’s broader bounty portfolio, not Copilot-specific payouts. In its August 5, 2024 year-in-review, the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) reported $16.6 million paid to 343 security researchers in 55 countries. The review listed the Microsoft AI Bounty Program among programs introduced during that cycle. In its August 5, 2025 review, MSRC reported $17 million distributed to 344 researchers in 59 countries during the 12 months ending June 2025, describing it as the highest total in the program’s history at that time.

Microsoft’s AI bounty effort began in October 2023. In its October 26, 2023 AI-safety policy announcement, Microsoft said external finders could be eligible for financial rewards through its bug bounty programs and described launching a new AI bug bounty program. The announcement linked that work to lessons from an AI research challenge and an updated vulnerability-severity classification for AI systems.
