IndiGo ordered 30 Airbus A350-900s to expand its international network to long-haul destinations. The airline said in 2024 that deliveries were expected to start in 2027, but that was an announced forecast—not a confirmed first-delivery date. A second order in 2025 brought the firm total to 60 aircraft.
Why did IndiGo order the A350-900?
IndiGo announced its first wide-body aircraft order on April 25, 2024: 30 Airbus A350-900s. Airbus reported the order on May 6. IndiGo said the aircraft would support its plan to expand its international network to long-haul destinations.
The A350 purchase was a strategic step beyond the airline’s existing fleet plans, but the announcement did not specify future routes, cabin layout, seating, or a final aircraft configuration. IndiGo said the A350-900s would be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.
Airbus said the A350 offers a 25 percent advantage in fuel burn, operating costs, and CO2 emissions compared with previous-generation competitor aircraft. That is the manufacturer’s stated comparison; the available information does not independently validate the claim.

How many A350s has IndiGo ordered?
The total depends on the distinction between firm orders and purchase rights. At the initial announcement, IndiGo committed to 30 aircraft and also secured rights to purchase 70 more A350 Family aircraft. Those rights were not firm orders.

On October 17, 2025, IndiGo confirmed that it had converted another 30 purchase rights into firm A350-900 orders, bringing its firm total to 60. The airline said the conversion reflected its confidence in Indian aviation and its Airbus partnership, as well as a strong start to its long-haul operations. The statement describes IndiGo’s rationale and outlook, rather than independent evidence of future demand.

When are the A350s expected to arrive?
IndiGo said in its 2024 announcement that A350 deliveries were expected to start in 2027. The reviewed announcements do not give a confirmed first-delivery date or an updated delivery schedule. The 2027 timing should therefore be understood as the airline’s expectation when it announced the order, not proof that deliveries have begun or a guarantee of a particular arrival date.

On July 31, 2026, IndiGo announced an operational adjustment involving leased wide-body aircraft. It said wide-body operations would be discontinued from October 25, 2026, and that its Norse Atlantic damp-lease arrangement would conclude by October 31. This update concerns leased aircraft and near-term operations; it does not say the A350 order was cancelled. It also does not replace the longer-term plan IndiGo described for using A350s to expand long-haul international flying.
