High memory prices are helping lift earnings at Samsung and SK hynix, but the boom is not simply a story of people paying more for desktop RAM. AI data centers are driving demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM, while suppliers’ production allocation toward server products is tightening the supply available to PC makers. Samsung says industry-wide price increases contributed to its record results; those higher prices are one factor in a broader semiconductor business, not proof that consumer RAM alone caused the profit surge.
What the latest results show
Samsung Electronics reported record second-quarter 2026 earnings. In its official results, the company said, “The continued industry-wide upward trend of prices also contributed to the record earnings.” Samsung also described robust server demand in the second half of 2026, centered on servers and AI infrastructure. Associated Press reported Samsung’s Q2 operating profit at 89.5 trillion won. That is a group-wide figure, not the profit of Samsung’s memory business alone. The distinction matters: Samsung sells products across multiple businesses, so a group total cannot be treated as a standalone measure of memory profitability. For the market as a whole, TrendForce estimated that DRAM industry revenue reached nearly US$154.73 billion in Q2 2026, an increase of 59.5% from the previous quarter. These are TrendForce’s industry estimates, not company-reported revenue or profit. TrendForce’s Q2 2026 DRAM estimate

Why AI demand can lift memory prices
AI servers use high-value memory
AI infrastructure needs substantial memory capacity and performance. Samsung, SK hynix and TrendForce all point to demand for AI-server products, including HBM and server DRAM, as an important part of the current market. HBM is designed to work closely with processors in demanding computing systems; server DRAM serves the broader memory needs of data-center machines. These products are not the whole memory market, but their demand is central to the companies’ explanations of current conditions. Samsung Q2 results · SK hynix Q2 results · TrendForce market estimate
Capacity allocation affects PC supply
Memory makers have to decide how to use manufacturing capacity across products and customers. TrendForce says suppliers’ reallocation of capacity toward server applications reduces the availability of PC DRAM. That is an allocation constraint, not evidence that manufacturers have stopped making consumer memory. When supply is tighter relative to demand, buyers may face higher contract prices. Higher prices can improve earnings
When demand is strong and supply is constrained, prices for memory products can rise. Samsung explicitly connected industry-wide price increases to its record earnings. The company’s statement supports a contribution from higher memory prices; it does not establish that retail prices for desktop RAM alone explain its total profit growth. Product mix, business scope and other operating factors also matter when interpreting a diversified company’s results.
What this could mean for PC buyers
TrendForce says high contract prices put pressure on PC and smartphone affordability. If PC makers pay more for DRAM, some of that cost pressure may eventually show up in the prices of computers or upgrades. The timing and size of any effect on shoppers can vary by market, device, inventory and retailer. Contract-market trends do not set a single retail price for every RAM kit.

For shoppers planning a PC upgrade, check compatibility before focusing on price: confirm whether the system uses desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs, what memory generation the motherboard supports, its supported speeds and capacities, and how many slots are available. A market-wide price trend cannot determine which module is right for a particular computer.

In an outlook dated September 30, 2026, TrendForce said AI-server demand continued to support Q4 contract-price increases. It also described PC buyers procuring memory amid expectations of DRAM tightness in 2027. These are analyst projections and market observations, not confirmed future prices or a guarantee that every consumer will pay more. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook

Company results and analyst forecasts answer different questions. Samsung and SK hynix reported Q2 2026 results in the available company sources, while TrendForce’s figures and price outlook are market estimates. Comparing companies also requires care over whether a number covers the whole company or only memory, which products it includes, the reporting period, currency and accounting basis. The available results do not establish a comparable Micron fiscal Q4 2026 actual figure.
