Halloween merchandise can show up in stores well before fall. A July 2024 report found decorations at several retailers shortly after Independence Day, and retailers’ 2026 announcements again described summer launches. That does not mean every store follows the same calendar—or that an announced product is in stock at your local branch.
Why is Halloween already in stores in summer?
The short answer is that some retailers schedule Halloween collections to launch during summer, rather than waiting until September or October. The available announcements establish that early launches happen; they do not establish a single reason retailers choose that timing, or prove a market-wide shift in sales or consumer demand.
Sabina Graves’s July 10, 2024 Gizmodo report described Halloween goods appearing soon after July 4, while summer products were still being sold. The examples included pumpkins, ghosts, skeletons, licensed décor and large animated props. That is a snapshot of 2024, not a current directory of retailers or a promise that the same products are available now.

The Home Depot’s 2026 announcement described the returning 12-foot SKELLY animatronic, including app-enabled options for customizing movement and sound. Those features were described for SKELLY; they should not be assumed to apply to other decorations.

Spirit Halloween’s Summerween announcement and seasonal store announcement confirm company plans, not what a particular location has on its shelves. Michaels’ 2026 collection announcement also points to an early-season option for shoppers interested in making decorations, with seasonal fabrics, costume-making supplies, party items and DIY decorating experiences.
Which stores have Halloween decorations early?
The 2024 examples included Disney Store, Lowe’s, Spirit Halloween, Home Depot, Party City, Michaels, At Home and Joann. Because that list comes from a report published in 2024, it should not be treated as a verified list of stores operating or carrying Halloween merchandise in 2026. Retailers’ current product pages and local store information are better guides to what is available now.

For 2026, the Home Depot announced a staggered rollout: online and app availability starting July 16, followed by an in-store arrival later in August. Spirit Halloween announced a limited Summerween collection and said more than 1,550 seasonal stores were opening in the U.S. and Canada. These company announcements establish planned timing and scope, but not local stock.
What kinds of early Halloween items can you look for?
- Ready-made décor: The reported and announced assortments include familiar seasonal pieces such as pumpkins, ghosts and skeletons, as well as larger decorations.
- Animated props: Retailer announcements describe large animatronics, including The Home Depot’s 12-foot SKELLY. Check the exact product description for its features.
- Licensed themes: The 2024 report included licensed décor, while Spirit Halloween’s 2026 Summerween announcement featured licensed Terrifier merchandise.
- DIY and party supplies: Michaels’ 2026 announcement described seasonal fabrics, costume-making supplies, party items and decorating experiences for shoppers who want to make or customize items.
How to shop early without mistaking a launch for local stock
- Check the current product page. A launch announcement says when a retailer plans to begin offering a collection; it does not confirm that a specific item is still available.
- Confirm your local store’s status. Inventory and timing can vary by location. Check the store’s current listing or contact the branch before making a trip.
- Pay attention to the sales channel and date. An online or app launch can precede in-store availability, as The Home Depot announced for its 2026 collection.
- Use restock alerts when offered. Gizmodo reported sellouts and advised readers to watch for restocks in 2024; that advice may be useful, but it is not a guarantee that a product will return.
- Verify the exact item before buying elsewhere. Halloween animatronic decorations are a broad shopping category, but the announcements cited here do not establish that a named retailer’s specific model is sold on Amazon.
What the early launches do—and do not—tell shoppers
Early listings can give shoppers a chance to browse seasonal décor, costume supplies or larger props before fall. But the evidence here is about retailer announcements and reported launch timing, not a complete view of the market. It does not show that all stores launch in summer, explain why retailers choose their schedules, or establish how much Halloween merchandise sells.

The Home Depot’s decorative holiday merchant, Aubrey Horowitz, described the retailer’s approach this way in its July 15, 2026 announcement: “We are constantly inspired by the inventive spirit of the Halloween enthusiast community, and their year-round passion motivates us to push the boundaries of innovation in our collection each year.”
