The amount was a numerical spelling of “Google,” and Google later doubled the reward after Ved donated it to charity. It was not payment for a lasting transfer of the domain.
Why was the reward $6,006.13?
Google chose the figure as a playful numerical rendering of its name. In its January 28, 2016 account of the company’s 2015 security rewards, Google wrote that the initial $6,006.13 “spelled-out Google, numerically (squint a little and you’ll see it!).” Google Security’s 2015 year-in-review describes the payment as a security reward.
Why did Google double the amount?
Ved donated his reward to charity, so Google doubled it to $12,012.26. The doubled figure follows directly from Google’s stated initial amount. Google’s retrospective does not name the charity; contemporaneous reporting by The Guardian identified the intended recipient as the Art of Living India Foundation.
What happened with google.com?
Ved, a former Google employee, was exploring Google Domains on September 29, 2015, when he saw google.com listed as available and completed a purchase for $12, according to The Guardian’s October 2, 2015 report. Google says he owned the domain for about one minute. The company canceled the transaction and refunded the purchase price shortly afterward, so the reward was separate from the $12 transaction and did not reflect a permanent change in ownership.

How did google.com appear available?
The available sources establish that the listing appeared in Google Domains and that Ved completed the brief purchase, but they do not establish the technical cause. Google’s retrospective confirms the one-minute purchase without explaining why the domain appeared available. An expiration error, race condition, or other proposed mechanism should therefore be treated as speculation, not a confirmed explanation.

No. Google reported the amount as a reward to Ved, with the number selected for its wordplay; it does not describe it as a standard rate for this type of report. For context, Google said it paid more than $2 million to over 300 people across its 2015 security rewards. It also reported more than $200,000 in Android Vulnerability Reward Program payments that year, including a largest single Android payment of $37,500. Those are Google’s reported 2015 program totals, not a formula for calculating Ved’s award.
