Why GM Ended BrightDrop Van Production—and What Buyers Should Know

GM ended BrightDrop electric van production at its Ontario plant in 2025 and said it would not move manufacturing elsewhere. Here are the company’s stated reasons, later delivery figures, and what remains unknown for existing fleets.

General Motors ended BrightDrop electric van production at its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, and said it would not move production elsewhere. GM attributed the decision to slower-than-expected growth in the commercial electric van market, underused plant capacity, a changing regulatory environment, and the elimination of U.S. tax credits. Those are GM’s stated reasons; its public announcement did not quantify how much each factor contributed.

What GM ended—and when

On October 21, 2025, GM confirmed that it was ending production of BrightDrop electric delivery vans at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario. Production had been suspended since May 2025, according to GM’s announcement. The company said production would not be transferred to another site and that it would assess CAMI for future opportunities.

GM Canada president and managing director Kristian Aquilina said: “The decision to end production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van is driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.” That is GM’s characterization of the decision, not an independent finding about the causes.

Why GM says it discontinued the BrightDrop

GM cited four considerations in its announcement:

  • Growth in the commercial electric van market was “much slower than expected,” in GM’s wording.
  • CAMI was operating below capacity.
  • The regulatory environment was changing.
  • U.S. tax credits had been eliminated.

GM did not publish a breakdown showing the relative effect of these factors. The available company statements therefore support reporting them as GM’s explanation, not assigning the decision to one policy change or estimating the financial impact of any one factor.

What the delivery figures show—and what they do not

GM’s October 1, 2026 U.S. delivery report still listed BrightDrop 400/600 models, even though production had ended. GM reported 1,344 deliveries in Q3 2026, compared with 2,384 in Q3 2025, a 43.6% decline. For January through September, it reported 2,300 deliveries in 2026 versus 3,976 in the same period of 2025, down 42.2%. The report’s footnote combines Chevrolet BrightDrop and BrightDrop Zevo 400/600 models and says vehicle totals include discontinued models. These figures are deliveries, not evidence that manufacturing resumed.

Production ending is not the same as support ending

GM’s October 2025 production announcement does not establish what happened to current new or used inventory, warranty coverage, parts supply, or service arrangements for existing fleets. It would be premature to assume that support ended when production stopped—or to assume specific post-production commitments. Fleet owners should confirm the terms for their vehicle and location directly with GM or a participating dealer.

GM had previously announced a change in sales channel. In August 2024, it said the BrightDrop 400 and 600 would be sold under Chevrolet through qualifying Chevrolet commercial dealers, with service available at participating certified dealerships; that announcement also said CAMI production would continue. This is historical information, not confirmation that the same network or terms remain in force today. See GM’s August 2024 announcement.

Financial context: GM’s EV charge was broader than BrightDrop

In its October 2025 filing, GM reported $1.6 billion in GM North America charges in Q3 2025 related to strategic EV capacity realignment. The filing also said GM decided in October to stop producing BrightDrop EVs. The $1.6 billion figure covers broader EV capacity realignment; GM did not identify it as a BrightDrop-only cost. See GM’s Q3 2025 SEC filing.

How BrightDrop fit into GM before the shutdown

GM says it introduced BrightDrop at CES in January 2021 and integrated the business into GM Envolve, its fleet business, in 2023. The main vehicles were the BrightDrop 400 and 600, also reported under BrightDrop Zevo naming. In August 2024, GM announced that they would be sold under Chevrolet, a move that placed them in its commercial dealer channel. The 2025 production decision ended manufacturing at CAMI without announcing a new production site.

For a fleet evaluating any electric commercial van, useful comparison criteria include usable cargo volume and payload, range under the fleet’s working conditions, charging access and uptime, purchase and operating costs, service coverage, and fleet-management integration. The published figures above do not by themselves compare BrightDrop with other vans or establish why individual customers chose—or did not choose—the vehicle.
