Why was the A380 grounded for 139 days?
Global Airlines’ aircraft 9H-GLOBL returned to storage at Tarbes on July 16, 2025, after maintenance activity in Dresden. On December 2, 2025, VisaVerge reported that it had been grounded for 139 days. The report attributed the extended pause to limited availability and scheduling for A380 heavy maintenance.
CEO James Asquith was quoted in that report as saying, “Due to maintenance availability, an extended grounding ensued, which has since turned into aircraft storage.” In other words, the reported explanation was not a newly disclosed operational incident: the airline was waiting on the maintenance capacity and scheduling needed to take the aircraft through the required work.
What maintenance was planned?
In June 2026, Global confirmed it had a slot lined up for a 12-year check and planned to position the aircraft at a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility by the end of that year. CAPA quoted the airline saying, “We have a 12-year slot lined up… MRO availability and capacity is extremely stretched at the moment.”

A 12-year check is a scheduled heavy-maintenance event. The available reporting identifies the check as the work planned for 9H-GLOBL, but does not establish its detailed scope or show that the work had begun by October 8, 2026. Global’s statement about stretched capacity is the company’s description; the available sources do not provide a separate industry-wide backlog figure.

The latest dated update available as of October 8, 2026, was a September report that Asquith aimed for a return before Christmas 2026 after the heavy-maintenance check. Which aircraft is involved?
