Glenn Kelman left Redfin in January 2026 after 20 years as its CEO. He said the decision came as Redfin moved beyond its first integration phase under Rocket Companies and toward a larger-scale next phase. Redfin named Alessio Sanfilippo CEO effective immediately on August 31, 2026; Varun Krishna had led the company in the interim.
Why did Glenn Kelman leave Redfin?
Kelman described his departure as a personal decision about whether he wanted to stay for the next stage of Redfin’s development under Rocket, not as a response to a reported conflict or a stated forced exit. In an employee note quoted by GeekWire on January 13, 2026, he wrote, “Redfin just completed our first phase as a Rocket company, integration.” He said the next phase would be much larger in scale and that facing it led him to consider whether he wanted to remain at Rocket for years.
Kelman also said he wanted to look beyond real estate for his next undertaking: “Instead, I want to try finding another mission-driven enterprise outside of real estate.” That was his stated ambition at the time; it does not establish that he had already chosen a new company or role when he announced his departure.
What happened after his departure?
January: interim leadership
Kelman’s last day was January 16, 2026, and GeekWire reported that he would remain in an advisory role through April 1. Rocket Companies CEO Varun Krishna ran Redfin while the company looked for a permanent leader, according to the same report.

August: a new CEO
Redfin announced on August 31, 2026, that Alessio Sanfilippo had been named CEO, effective immediately. The appointment superseded the interim arrangement. Sanfilippo came from Meta, where he was vice president of insights for Reality Labs. Redfin’s announcement said he had more than 20 years of experience in product, data, analytics, and technology, and had previously led data and user research for WhatsApp and data and analytics at Intuit.
Krishna, CEO of Rocket Companies, described the strategic opportunity as connecting Redfin’s home-search and brokerage services with mortgage, closing, and servicing. He said: “Now he gets to bring that experience to Redfin and help us connect home search, brokerage, mortgage, closing and servicing into one experience.” This is the company’s stated aim, not a claim that every part of that experience is already combined.

What is Glenn Kelman doing now?
On June 24, 2026, Real Estate News reported that Kelman had joined Greylock as an executive in residence. He would advise founders on leadership development, company building, go-to-market strategy, and scaling. The report also said he still intended to explore starting a mission-driven enterprise, so the Greylock role was a later update rather than the stated destination of his January departure.
How the leadership transition unfolded
- 2005: Kelman joined Redfin, which GeekWire said had launched the year before.
- July 2025: Rocket Companies acquired Redfin. Redfin later described the combination as bringing together home search, brokerage, mortgage origination, closing, and servicing.
- January 13–16, 2026: Kelman announced he would step down; January 16 was reported as his last day. He was to remain an adviser through April 1.
- Interim period: Rocket CEO Varun Krishna ran Redfin while it sought a permanent leader.
- June 24, 2026: Kelman joined Greylock as an executive in residence, according to Real Estate News.
- August 31, 2026: Redfin named Alessio Sanfilippo CEO, effective immediately.
What the change means for Redfin
Kelman’s exit marked the end of a 20-year CEO tenure, not the company’s independence: Rocket acquired Redfin in July 2025. Redfin’s announcement of Sanfilippo places the leadership change in the context of Rocket’s effort to connect home search, brokerage, mortgage, closing, and servicing. The public statements establish that strategic direction and the succession, but do not establish that Kelman left because of a dispute or that the planned customer experience is already fully integrated.
