In July 2025, some Etsy buyers and sellers called for a boycott after merchandise branded “Alligator Alcatraz” appeared on the marketplace. They argued that some listings conflicted with Etsy’s policy on degrading content aimed at protected classes. That was the boycotters’ interpretation—not a reported finding that Etsy violated its policy.
What prompted the boycott?
TechCrunch reported on July 22, 2025, that a subset of Etsy buyers and sellers had begun calling for a boycott that month. The campaign was loosely organized on social media, including Threads and Reddit, with references on X, TikTok and Facebook. Some sellers threatened to close their shops, while some buyers said they were closing their accounts. The report did not establish how many people took part.
The dispute centered on Etsy allowing merchandise bearing the name “Alligator Alcatraz.” The reported products included T-shirts, hats, mugs, stickers and patches. Similar merchandise was also available on Amazon, eBay and Shopify at the time. The Promotional Products Association International reported on July 29, 2025, that Florida GOP merchandise included T-shirts, hats and other promotional products.
What was the policy argument?
TechCrunch reported that Etsy users pointed to the marketplace’s published Discrimination and Hateful Content Policy, which listed immigration status as a protected class. The users argued that some products included degrading commentary aimed at protected classes. This was their position in the dispute; the reporting did not describe a formal policy adjudication or establish that Etsy had violated its rules.

How did Etsy and other platforms respond?
At the time of TechCrunch’s report, Etsy had not responded to the publication’s multiple requests for comment. TechCrunch said Amazon told it the merchandise complied with Amazon’s guidelines. These contemporaneous responses do not amount to a full comparison of the platforms’ policies or enforcement: one was no response from Etsy, and the other was Amazon’s statement about its own guidelines.
TechCrunch also reported, citing Appfigures data, that Etsy’s U.S. iOS app remained in the Shopping category’s top 20 throughout July 2025. That app-store ranking does not show how many people joined the boycott or whether sales were affected.
