At Tesla’s July 28, 2017 Model 3 handover event, Elon Musk warned that the company’s production ramp would be difficult for at least six months. The headline’s “next six months” refers to that 2017 warning—not a current forecast. Tesla’s subsequent disclosures show how far production fell short at first, what constraint it identified, and how output later rose.
What Musk meant by “production hell”
Speaking at the Model 3 handover event on July 28, 2017, Musk described the challenge as building a large number of cars over the next six to nine months. He said, “Welcome, welcome, welcome to production hell. That’s going to be where we are for at least six months, maybe longer.” The event transcript is hosted by the Tesla Motors Club archive, which describes the recording as the official Tesla event video.
The warning concerned the immediate Model 3 manufacturing ramp. It was not a prediction about Tesla’s production today. Musk also told customers that production would move as fast as the slowest component in the mix—a useful description of why a line can struggle even when most of its parts or processes are ready.
What happened after the warning
Tesla’s October 2, 2017 production release said the company made just 260 Model 3s in the third quarter and that production was below expectations because of bottlenecks. The figure was quarterly output, not a weekly rate. Tesla’s Q3 2017 production release

Tesla later identified a specific constraint in its fiscal 2017 Form 10-K: the battery module assembly line at Gigafactory 1 was the primary production constraint to date. The filing set new weekly production targets—2,500 Model 3s by the end of Q1 2018 and 5,000 by the end of Q2 2018. Those numbers were targets stated in the filing, not reported results. Targets and reported output, by measurement window
| Period or milestone | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 2017 | 260 Model 3s | Tesla-reported production across the quarter; the company cited bottlenecks. |
| End of Q1 2018 target | 2,500 per week | Weekly target in Tesla’s fiscal 2017 Form 10-K, not an achieved result. |
| End of Q2 2018 target | 5,000 per week | Weekly target in Tesla’s fiscal 2017 Form 10-K, not an achieved result. |
| Final seven days of Q2 2018 | 5,031 Model 3s | Output during the quarter’s final seven days, reported by Tesla. |
| Q3 2018 | 53,239 Model 3s | Tesla-reported production across the quarter. |
| Q3 2018 average rate | Approximately 4,300 per week | Tesla’s reported average excluding planned shutdowns. |
| Final week of Q3 2018 | More than 5,300 Model 3s | Output in the quarter’s final week, as reported by Tesla. |
Why a strong final week is not a quarterly average
Tesla reported 5,031 Model 3s produced in the final seven days of Q2 2018, a weekly milestone rather than the quarter’s average pace. The company’s July 2 release said it expected to raise output to 6,000 per week by late the following month; that, too, was a forecast at the time. Tesla’s Q2 2018 production release

For Q3 2018, Tesla reported 53,239 Model 3s produced, more than 5,300 in the final week, and an average rate of approximately 4,300 per week excluding planned shutdowns. The closing-week figure and the shutdown-adjusted average describe different windows and should not be treated as interchangeable measures. The disclosures document a difficult ramp: Q3 2017 production was far below Tesla’s expectations, the company identified battery-module assembly as its primary constraint at the time, and later reports showed substantially higher Model 3 output. They do not establish that reaching a final-week milestone eliminated all bottlenecks, nor do these 2017–2018 figures describe Tesla’s present manufacturing performance.
