Its monumental limestone exterior, Beaux-Arts influence and grand, highly customized rooms help explain the name. The magazine reported the home at 50,000 square feet, but its 2020 feature did not verify the often-repeated $100 million figure as either construction cost or current value.
What does “The Embassy” mean?
Architectural Digest’s April 2020 profile calls Drake’s Toronto residence “The Embassy.” It presents the phrase as the home’s nickname; the feature does not say the residence serves a diplomatic function or trace the nickname to a separate origin story. The name fits the house’s imposing, formal character: a monumental limestone façade and interiors designed to feel grand rather than ordinary.
Drake told the magazine that he wanted the home to have “a monumental scale and feel” and to stand firm for 100 years. That was his ambition for the project, not a guarantee about the building’s lifespan.
How large is Drake’s Toronto home?
Architectural Digest reported the residence at 50,000 square feet. That is the magazine’s figure for this property, not an independently presented measurement or a comparison with other homes. The feature also reports a 44-foot-high great room, a 3,200-square-foot master-bedroom suite and 1,100 square feet of covered terraces attached to that suite.

What gives the house its distinctive look?
Beaux-Arts influence, with a cleaner exterior
The design takes cues from traditional Beaux-Arts architecture, but the profile describes the result as a more contemporary interpretation. Canadian architectural and interior designer Ferris Rafauli described the structure as “a proper 19th-century limestone mansion,” while noting that its exterior profiles are more minimal and its lines cleaner.
Stone, metal and richly finished interiors
The materials named in the profile include limestone, bronze, exotic woods, Nero Marquina marble and macassar ebony. These choices help account for the house’s formal, highly finished appearance. Drake characterized the effect as “overwhelming high luxury,” pointing to the scale of the rooms and the detailing of their floors and ceilings.

A great room built around custom pieces
The 44-foot-high great room contains a bespoke Bösendorfer concert grand piano designed with artist Takashi Murakami and Rafauli. The room also features a Metropolitan chandelier made with more than 20,000 hand-cut Swarovski crystal pieces. Architectural Digest described it as the second largest of its kind in the world; that ranking is the magazine’s report, not an independently verified comparison.
