Donald Trump met Elon Musk and other wealthy Republican donors in Palm Beach over the weekend before March 6, 2024, as Trump sought campaign funding, according to contemporaneous news reports. The private conversation was not disclosed in full, and the reporting does not establish that Musk promised Trump money at the meeting.

Why did Trump meet with Musk?

The meeting took place amid a fundraising gap between the two presidential campaigns. The Guardian, citing campaign disclosures, reported that Trump’s campaign had just over $30 million in cash on hand at the end of January 2024, compared with about $56 million for Joe Biden’s campaign. Those figures describe campaign cash at that point in time—not either candidate’s personal wealth or the campaigns’ eventual 2024 totals. The Guardian’s March 6 report summarized the account of the meeting, which had been reported by The New York Times.

Reuters separately reported that a source confirmed the gathering. Neither report provides a full account of what was said. The available reporting does not establish whether Trump personally asked Musk for money or whether Musk made any commitment. Reuters’ March 6 report covered Musk’s public response.

Did Musk say he would donate to Trump?

No. On March 6, 2024, Musk wrote on X: “Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.” The statement referred to donations to either presidential candidate; it did not rule out political spending through other channels.

What did Musk spend on politics later in 2024?

Later campaign-finance filings showed substantial political spending by Musk, but they do not establish that he agreed to give Trump money at the Palm Beach meeting.

  • By October 2024: The Associated Press reported, based on campaign-finance disclosures, that Musk had contributed more than $70 million to America PAC. This was an earlier snapshot, not a year-end total. AP’s report discussed the contributions and the political committee.
  • For 2024 overall: The Washington Post’s analysis of Federal Election Commission filings reported that Musk gave at least $277 million in political donations supporting Trump and other Republicans. The paper noted that its total could be incomplete, and that most of the money went to America PAC. The Washington Post’s analysis described the filings and spending.

Why the recipient of political money matters

A donation to a candidate’s campaign is not the same as a contribution to an outside political group. The figures reported for Musk’s later spending include support through America PAC and other channels; they should not be read as a direct donation to Trump’s campaign.

As the Associated Press explains, super PACs may raise and spend unlimited sums, but they are generally barred from coordinating their spending with the candidates they support. That general rule does not, by itself, establish what happened in any particular case or resolve what was discussed at the March meeting. AP’s explanation of the political spending provides context on the outside-group channel.
