The right backpack is the one that fits your routine, your load and the way you dress—not simply the one with the most pockets or the highest price. This shortlist draws on named picks from Good Housekeeping, Men’s Health, GQ and British GQ. It includes office, everyday, school and travel options; it is not a claim that these are the only or definitively best eight backpacks on the market.
How to choose a backpack that earns its place
Start with the job the bag will do most often. A commuter carrying a laptop and lunch needs different access and organization than a traveler packing several days of clothes. A polished leather bag may suit a formal office but be heavier and less spacious than a practical nylon pack. Decide what you carry on an ordinary day before paying for capacity or features you may not use.
- Match capacity to your load. Litres indicate volume, not how comfortably or neatly a particular set of items will fit. Check the bag’s dimensions and layout as well as its stated capacity.
- Check laptop fit carefully. A stated maximum screen size is useful, but compare your laptop’s actual dimensions with the compartment’s measurements where available. A sleeve is not necessarily the same as a padded, separately accessed laptop section.
- Think about access. A suitcase-style opening can make a travel bag easier to pack; a simpler top-loading design can work well for everyday essentials. Pocket quantity is only helpful when the pockets suit what you carry.
- Consider comfort with a real load. Padded straps and a back panel can help, but fit depends on your body and how the bag sits when packed. Where a publication reports comfort testing, that is its assessment—not a guarantee for every wearer.
- Read weather claims literally. Water-resistant, water-repellent and waterproof are not interchangeable. Do not assume a bag or its zippers will protect contents in prolonged rain unless the maker’s current specifications say so.
- Compare total value, not just sticker price. No current, comparable prices are established for this shortlist. Check the maker or retailer for live pricing, warranty terms and availability in your country before buying.
Eight backpacks to consider
| Backpack | Best suited to | Useful reported details | Trade-off or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack | Work and commuting | 28 L; recycled nylon; laptop sleeve for up to 17-inch laptops; bottle pocket | Good Housekeeping reports limited dark-neutral colors. Its comfort assessment is the publication’s, not a universal fit guarantee. |
| Matein Travel Laptop Backpack | Budget-minded travel and everyday use | 30 L; laptop, phone and pen pockets; luggage strap; hidden anti-theft pocket; external USB port with cable | Good Housekeeping says its appearance is not especially stylish. The external USB port does not itself supply power. |
| The North Face Borealis | Comfort-focused everyday carry or school | Named “most comfortable” by Men’s Health and listed for school by GQ | Those recommendations do not establish the specifications of every current version; check the exact model before purchase. |
| JanSport Right Pack | Classic everyday carry | 28 L; Cordura and suede; laptop sleeve and bottle pocket; 17.5 × 12.5 × 5 inches | GQ says it is not water-resistant. Its straightforward layout may not suit someone who wants extensive organization. |
| Evergoods Civic Travel Backpack 35L | Travel | GQ names the 35 L Civic Travel Backpack as its best travel backpack | Current dimensions, weight and revision are not stated in the cited guide information here; verify the exact model before comparing it with airline limits. |
| Troubadour Pioneer 3.0 | Polished commute, gym and trip crossover | 24 L; 1.2 kg; separate shoe compartment with waterproof lining; tech section for up to a 17-inch laptop | British GQ describes it as waterproof, but confirm the maker’s current water-protection language and care instructions. The cited guide reports waterproof zips. |
| Antler Discovery | Travel with suitcase-style packing | 28 L; 1.17 kg; suitcase-style opening; luggage sleeve; recycled polyester; laptop protection up to 16.5 inches | British GQ describes it as water-resistant, not waterproof. Its guide is UK-based; any quoted pound price should not be treated as a US price. |
| Carl Friedrik Ayrton | Premium leather and office style | 15.5 L; 1.3 kg; full-grain leather; 16-inch laptop compartment; integrated luggage sleeve | British GQ says it is not specifically designed for water resistance. It offers less capacity than travel-focused options and is positioned as a premium leather bag. |
For a work commute: Timbuk2 Authority Laptop Backpack
Good Housekeeping names the Authority its best overall men’s backpack. Its reported 28 L capacity, 17-inch laptop sleeve and bottle pocket make it a plausible fit for a workday load, while recycled nylon gives it a more technical look than leather. Good Housekeeping reports padded straps and a back panel, plus a removable sternum strap, and says its testing found it comfortable. Those findings reflect the publication’s assessment; shoulder width, torso length and packed weight still affect individual comfort. The guide also notes that the color selection is limited to dark neutrals. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 guide says its Textiles Lab tested 40 backpack styles, including fabric durability and packing tests, and collected male tester feedback on comfort, ease of packing and style.
For value and organization: Matein Travel Laptop Backpack
Good Housekeeping’s value pick is a 30 L polyester bag with dedicated laptop, phone and pen pockets, a luggage strap and a hidden anti-theft pocket. It also has an external USB port connected to an internal cable; you need your own power bank to use it, and the port is not a battery. This layout may appeal if you want work items separated without spending on a more formal-looking bag. The trade-off is appearance: Good Housekeeping says the Matein is not especially stylish. Its guide showed a sale price when published, but that is not a dependable current price, so check the live listing before making a budget comparison.

For comfort-oriented daily carry: The North Face Borealis
Men’s Health names the Borealis its most comfortable backpack, and GQ includes it as a school option. Men’s Health says its editors tested dozens of bags over several months across commutes, bike rides, outings and gym trips; it does not give an exact sample count. The available descriptions do not establish a single current Borealis version or its exact specifications, so confirm the model, laptop fit, capacity and features with the manufacturer before ordering. Treat “most comfortable” as Men’s Health’s editorial verdict, not a promise that the pack will fit every body equally well. Men’s Health’s 2026 guide provides its testing context.
For a simple classic: JanSport Right Pack
GQ reports a 28 L capacity, Cordura fabric with a suede bottom, a laptop sleeve, a bottle pocket and dimensions of 17.5 × 12.5 × 5 inches. Those proportions and a simple design make it an everyday option for someone who does not need a maze of compartments. The material choice gives it a recognizable casual look rather than a sleek business profile. GQ says the bag is not water-resistant, so it is a poor choice if weather protection is a priority. GQ’s 2025 guide is the source for these details.

For travel: Evergoods Civic Travel Backpack 35L
GQ identifies the 35 L Civic Travel Backpack as its best travel backpack. The capacity makes it worth considering for a trip where one bag needs to carry more than a daily commute, but capacity alone does not establish whether it fits your packing style or a particular airline’s baggage limits. The cited information does not give current dimensions, weight or model revision. Check those details against the current product listing and the airline’s rules for your route before relying on it as cabin baggage.
For a polished work-to-gym crossover: Troubadour Pioneer 3.0
British GQ names the Pioneer 3.0 its best overall backpack and reports 24 L capacity, a 1.2 kg weight, a tech section for up to a 17-inch laptop and a separate shoe compartment with waterproof lining. The guide also reports FortiWeave fabric made from recycled plastic bottles and waterproof zips. The shoe compartment and more tailored styling make it a crossover option for someone moving between work and training, rather than a minimalist office-only bag. British GQ describes the backpack as waterproof; because water protection can depend on construction, care and exposure, check the brand’s current language before treating it as suitable for heavy rain. British GQ’s 2026 guide says travel editor Lela London assessed details including laptop protection, pocket placement, zip quality, materials, water resistance, comfort and weight.

For suitcase-style travel packing: Antler Discovery
British GQ’s travel pick is the 28 L Discovery. The guide reports a 1.17 kg weight, a suitcase-style main opening, a luggage sleeve, recycled polyester and laptop protection up to 16.5 inches. The opening is the most relevant distinction if you prefer to lay clothes into the main compartment rather than load everything through a narrow top. British GQ calls it water-resistant, which is not the same as waterproof. The guide is UK-based, so do not compare any pound-denominated price there directly with a US price.
For premium leather office style: Carl Friedrik Ayrton
The Ayrton is the style-led choice in this group: British GQ reports full-grain leather, a 15.5 L capacity, 1.3 kg weight, a 16-inch laptop compartment and an integrated luggage sleeve. Its relatively modest capacity and leather construction make it a different proposition from the larger travel packs, not a like-for-like upgrade. British GQ says the leather provides some protection but the bag is not specifically designed for water resistance. Consider it if appearance and a leather finish matter more than maximizing capacity or carrying a weather-oriented pack.

- TECH SPECS: Dimensions: 11" x 8.5" x 18" (27.9 cm x 21.6 cm x 45.7 cm); Laptop Sleeve: 11.5" x 11"; Tablet Sleeve: 11.8 " x 6.3"; Avg Weight: 1 lb 11 oz; Volume: 27 Liters. This item is not intended for use by children 12 and under.
Which one fits your routine?
- Mostly commuting with a laptop: Start with the Timbuk2 Authority if its 28 L size and dark-neutral styling suit you.
- Want pockets and travel-friendly features on a budget: Consider the Matein, but weigh its practical layout against its less polished appearance and verify the live price.
- Comfort is your first filter: The Borealis has a favorable Men’s Health comfort recommendation, but try it loaded if possible and confirm the exact version.
- Prefer a simple casual pack: The JanSport Right Pack gives you a classic shape and a stated 28 L volume, with no water-resistance claim to rely on.
- Need a larger travel-oriented bag: Compare the Evergoods 35 L option with the 28 L Antler Discovery, checking dimensions, access and airline rules rather than assuming either is universally cabin-approved.
- Want one bag for office and gym: The Troubadour’s shoe compartment is a specific crossover feature; check the maker’s current water claims.
- Prioritize leather office styling: The Carl Friedrik Ayrton is the premium, smaller-capacity option, not the best fit for maximizing space or rain protection.
Sources and what their testing establishes
The recommendations above combine publication picks, not one head-to-head test conducted under identical conditions. Good Housekeeping reports that its Textiles Lab tested 40 styles, measuring fabric durability, running packing tests and gathering male tester feedback. Men’s Health describes editors testing dozens of backpacks over several months in varied everyday activities, without stating an exact number. British GQ explains its evaluation criteria through travel editor Lela London. These methods offer useful editorial context, but they do not establish that every listed bag was tested by every publication, or that any one pack is best for every buyer. Verify current model revisions, specs, prices, availability and warranty details with the manufacturer or retailer before purchase.
