Amazon Prime usually keeps charging because membership renewal is automatic. But an unfamiliar recurring-looking Amazon charge may instead come from a Prime Video add-on, another Amazon subscription, an Amazon Pay merchant agreement, an ordinary order, a temporary authorization hold, or someone else using the account or card.
Identify the charge before canceling anything. Then cancel the specific subscription or recurring authorization, review backup payment methods, and request a refund or dispute the transaction if appropriate.

The most common reasons Amazon keeps charging you
- Prime auto-renewal: Your membership renews at its selected interval until you cancel it.
- A Prime Video add-on: Channels and other Prime Video subscriptions are separate from the main Prime membership and may continue independently.
- Another Amazon service: Amazon Music Unlimited, Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Amazon Photos, Amazon Business, and other services can bill separately.
- An Amazon Pay merchant agreement: A third-party website may be using Amazon Pay to collect recurring payments.
- An ordinary Amazon order: Amazon may charge items when they ship, including delayed items or products shipped separately.
- A pending authorization or unauthorized use: A temporary hold, household purchase, or compromised account can resemble a subscription charge.
Prime benefits and plan availability vary by country, eligibility, and plan type. Check the Prime page or your account for the current plan and renewal details rather than relying on an old price.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
- Check Your Orders: Look for an order with the same amount and date. Remember that one order can produce multiple charges when items ship separately, and a back-ordered item may be charged much later.
- Check Prime membership: Open your Amazon account and go to the Prime membership management area. Review the membership status and next renewal date.
- Check Memberships & Subscriptions: Look for Amazon Music, Kindle Unlimited, Audible, and other recurring services.
- Check Prime Video subscriptions: Review channel and add-on subscriptions. If the subscription was purchased through Apple, Google, Roku, a mobile carrier, or another platform, that platform generally controls cancellation.
- Check Amazon Pay: Go to Amazon Pay Activity, review both Activity and Merchant agreements, and open Details & Support for a matching transaction.
- Ask authorized users: Check household members, additional cardholders, gifts, and shared devices before treating the charge as fraud.
- Search your email: Look for renewal notices, trial-conversion messages, order receipts, and subscription confirmations.
Amazon.com orders and Amazon Pay activity are separate records. Checking only one can leave the source unidentified.
How to stop Prime from renewing
- Sign in directly to Amazon by typing the address into your browser or using the official app. Do not use a link in an unexpected billing or refund email.
- Open your account area and select the Prime membership management page.
- Review the renewal date and membership status.
- Choose the cancellation or end-membership control.
- Continue through every confirmation screen and choose whether Amazon offers an immediate end or an end at the close of the paid period.
- Save the confirmation email or take a screenshot.
- Recheck the membership status later to confirm that renewal is disabled.
Deleting a card is not the same as canceling Prime. If the membership remains active, Amazon may attempt another eligible payment method, including a backup method.
How to cancel a Prime Video add-on or another Amazon subscription
Cancel the service that matches the charge. Ending Prime does not necessarily end a separately purchased Prime Video channel, and ending a channel does not end the main Prime membership.

For Amazon-managed services, use the relevant subscription-management page in your Amazon account. Amazon Music subscriptions are managed through Amazon Music Settings; subscriptions purchased through Apple must be managed through Apple. The same billing-platform rule generally applies when Apple, Google, Roku, a carrier, or another intermediary processed the purchase.

How to stop an Amazon Pay recurring charge
Amazon Pay can let a third-party merchant charge a payment method stored in your Amazon account for subscriptions, usage-based bills, future purchases, or donations. A charge marked Amazon Pay is therefore not automatically a Prime charge.

Amazon recommends canceling an Amazon Pay recurring authorization at least five days before the next scheduled payment. This guidance applies to Amazon Pay recurring payments, not necessarily every Amazon.com or Prime subscription.
Canceling the Amazon Pay authorization stops the merchant from using that authorization for future charges, but it may not cancel the underlying service contract. Contact the merchant separately to end the service and avoid other billing methods or contractual obligations.
Why changing or deleting your card may not work
Amazon accounts can have primary and backup payment methods. For eligible charges, Amazon Pay may try a backup method when the primary method fails. To review this setting, go to Your Account → Your Payments → Settings → Manage backup payment method. Disable backup charging or unselect methods you do not want used, then save.

Removing a payment method can reduce an unwanted charging route, but it does not cancel Prime, an Amazon subscription, or a third-party merchant agreement. It can also interrupt legitimate orders and services.

Pending authorization
A pending or “Processing” entry may be a bank authorization hold rather than a completed charge. Amazon Pay says the bank may temporarily reserve the amount and release it after a few days, depending on the card issuer. Check whether the transaction settles before treating it as a final charge.
Completed renewal
Canceling future renewal does not automatically reverse a charge that has already completed. Refund eligibility depends on Amazon’s current policy, the plan, timing, usage, and account circumstances. Use the relevant Amazon or service support channel to request a review.

Amazon Pay payment already initiated
Amazon Pay says it cannot cancel an already initiated payment. The merchant may need to issue the refund. Contact the merchant and keep the transaction details from Amazon Pay Activity.
Chargeback or issuer dispute
Use your bank or card issuer’s dispute process when the transaction is genuinely unauthorized or the merchant does not resolve an appropriate complaint. Review the account first so you do not dispute a legitimate household purchase, split shipment, or delayed order.
If the charge is unauthorized
Do not assume fraud solely from an unfamiliar descriptor. First check orders, Amazon Pay, subscriptions, household users, gifts, delayed shipments, and pending authorizations. If nothing explains the charge:
- Change your Amazon password using the official Amazon site or app.
- Enable two-step verification or multifactor authentication.
- Remove unfamiliar payment methods and review backup-payment settings.
- Contact Amazon or Amazon Pay through the relevant official support path.
- Contact your bank or card issuer promptly to block the payment instrument or follow its fraud and dispute process.
Amazon’s guidance for unexplained Amazon Pay charges also recommends securing the account, enabling MFA, contacting the issuer, and notifying Amazon Pay buyer support.
Quick diagnostic guide
| What you see | Likely source | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Regular charge matching the Prime renewal | Prime membership | Review and cancel Prime renewal. |
| Smaller or unfamiliar recurring amount tied to video | Prime Video add-on | Review Prime Video subscriptions and the billing platform. |
| Descriptor references Amazon Pay or AMZN.COM/PMTS | Amazon Pay transaction or another Amazon-related charge | Match it in Amazon Pay Activity and Amazon.com records. |
| Amount matches an order but date is unexpected | Shipment, split shipment, or back order | Review order shipment and payment details. |
| Entry is pending or processing | Authorization hold | Wait for settlement or release while monitoring the account. |
| Nothing matches any account record | Potential unauthorized transaction | Secure Amazon, contact support, and notify the card issuer. |
Prevent another surprise charge
- Turn off unwanted renewals and save cancellation confirmations.
- Review Memberships & Subscriptions and Prime Video subscriptions periodically.
- Check Amazon Pay Merchant agreements.
- Review and remove unused payment methods.
- Review backup-payment settings.
- Enable MFA and use a unique Amazon password.
- Check whether a subscription was billed through Apple, Google, Roku, a carrier, or another intermediary.
- Monitor statements for at least one billing cycle after cancellation.
The key distinction is between stopping future billing and reversing a past payment. Identify the billing system first, cancel the correct service or authorization, and escalate unexplained completed charges to Amazon and your card issuer.
