Amazon launched Amazon Grocery on October 1, 2025, as a private-label food brand with more than 1,000 products. Amazon says most items cost less than $5 and that the launch assortment generally carries ratings of at least four stars on Amazon.com.
The important qualification: Amazon Grocery is not 1,000 entirely new products, and “most under $5” does not mean every item—or your delivered order—will cost less than $5. The brand brings together existing Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly products while adding new items, giving shoppers another private-label option for groceries, fresh foods, snacks and prepared meals.
What Amazon Grocery is
Amazon Grocery is a broad, value-oriented private-label grocery brand. At launch, Amazon described an assortment of more than 1,000 food products spanning:
- Milk, dairy products, cheese and eggs
- Fresh produce, including potatoes and carrots
- Meat, seafood and deli meat
- Rice, olive oil, honey and other pantry staples
- Bagels, bakery products and baking ingredients
- Snacks, beverages and frozen foods
- Prepared foods such as salad meals
- Refrigerated dough and lemonade
Examples named by Amazon include cage-free large white eggs, Caesar salad with chicken, everything bagels, shredded Parmesan, ground beef, oven-roasted turkey breast, jasmine rice and bite-size brownies. Amazon also identified additional products planned around the launch, including frozen pasta meals, pie fillings, granola, sliced loaf cakes, canned beans, frozen vegetables and expanded deli selections. Planned additions should not be treated as proof that every item is currently available.

Amazon’s launch announcement describes the brand as offering everyday low prices and says most products are priced under $5. It also says the launch products were rated four stars or higher on Amazon.com. Those are Amazon’s claims, not an independent price survey, taste test or nutritional evaluation. Is Amazon Grocery actually new?
It is new as a unified brand, but not every product is new. Amazon says Amazon Grocery combines existing private-label products sold under Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly with new products and future additions.
That means shoppers may see a new Amazon Grocery label on a product that is effectively a rebrand or repackaging of an existing item. Older Amazon Fresh or Happy Belly packaging may also remain in circulation during the transition. The launch should therefore be understood as a portfolio consolidation—not as Amazon developing 1,000 new recipes or products from scratch.
The consolidation may make Amazon’s grocery selection easier to find and give the company more consistency over packaging, assortment and pricing. Amazon also reported that customers purchased 15% more private-brand products in 2024 than in 2023 across Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh. That figure is company-reported and describes Amazon’s broader private-label business.

- Recommended to wash before consuming

- Delicious on their own as a healthy snack or as part of a recipe
- Sourced with high quality standards
- Refrigerate immediately for maximum shelf life and flavor
What does “most products under $5” mean?
It means Amazon says a majority of the Amazon Grocery assortment falls below the $5 price point. It does not mean:
- Every Amazon Grocery product costs less than $5
- Every package size is below $5
- Meat, seafood or larger multipacks will necessarily cost less than $5
- The price will remain unchanged over time
- The product is the cheapest option in your local market
- Your final order will cost less than $5 after fees, taxes or delivery requirements
A $4.99 package can still be more expensive per ounce, pound or serving than a larger competing package priced above $5. The threshold is best viewed as a sticker-price positioning message, not a complete measure of value.
How to check whether it is a real bargain
- Check the price for your ZIP code. Amazon’s displayed price and availability can vary by location, inventory and fulfillment channel.
- Compare unit prices. Look at the cost per ounce, pound, fluid ounce, count or serving.
- Check package size. A low total price may reflect a smaller package.
- Read the ingredients and nutrition facts. A four-star review does not establish that a product is healthier or nutritionally superior.
- Include delivery costs. Fees, order minimums and membership costs can erase the apparent savings on a small order.
- Compare the same type of item locally. Check store brands at Aldi, Walmart, Target, Costco and nearby supermarkets, using the same package size and date.
- Check promotions and Prime eligibility. A temporary discount is different from the regular price.
Amazon Grocery versus Amazon Saver
Amazon Grocery and Amazon Saver are separate brands, even though both use an under-$5 value message.
| Brand | Positioning | Product scope | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Grocery | Broad everyday grocery private label | Fresh, refrigerated, frozen, pantry, snacks, dairy, meat, seafood and prepared foods | “Most under $5” is an Amazon assortment-level claim, not an every-item guarantee |
| Amazon Saver | No-frills value brand | Budget staples such as crackers, cookies, canned fruit and condiments | It remains a separate, narrower value-focused brand |
| 365 by Whole Foods Market | Natural and organic-oriented private label | Whole Foods Market grocery products | It is not being replaced by Amazon Grocery |
Amazon Saver launched in September 2024. Amazon said most Amazon Saver items were under $5 and announced an additional 10% discount for Prime members under its then-described Amazon Fresh savings program. The existence of Amazon Grocery does not mean Amazon Saver has been discontinued. See Amazon’s Amazon Saver announcement.

Where can shoppers buy Amazon Grocery products?
At launch, Amazon said the products were available through Amazon.com and Amazon Fresh stores. Current access is more complicated because Amazon’s physical-store strategy has changed.
Amazon’s 2026 update says its same-day fresh-grocery delivery network reaches more than 2,300 U.S. cities and towns and that Amazon Grocery has grown to more than 1,000 items. That is a delivery-network figure, not a guarantee that every product is stocked in every ZIP code. Availability, price, delivery windows, fees and substitutions depend on location and fulfillment method. Check Amazon’s 2026 grocery-delivery update.
In January 2026, Amazon announced plans involving the closure of Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, with some locations converting to Whole Foods Market stores. As a result, launch-era references to Amazon Fresh stores should not be read as a promise that a nearby Amazon Fresh location still exists. The most reliable way to check is to enter your ZIP code on Amazon’s grocery shopping pages and review the available delivery or pickup options. Read Amazon’s store-strategy update.
How fresh groceries change the calculation
Pantry staples are relatively easy to compare online. Fresh food is different. Meat, seafood, dairy, produce and prepared meals can be affected by delivery timing, temperature control, short expiration windows, stockouts and substitutions.

Before ordering, check the substitution and refund policies, expected delivery time and whether you will be home to receive refrigerated items. A cheap perishable product is not a bargain if it arrives late, is substituted for a more expensive item or spoils before you can use it.

Amazon Grocery is one private-label choice, not proof that Amazon is the lowest-cost retailer. The best alternative depends on package size, shopping habits and access to physical stores.
- Walmart Great Value: A broad store-brand alternative with a large physical-store network.
- Target Good & Gather: A mainstream private label that can be convenient when combining groceries with Target purchases.
- Aldi private labels: Often attractive to shoppers focused on low prices and willing to use Aldi’s store network, though assortment and package sizes differ.
- Costco Kirkland Signature: Potentially useful for bulk buyers, but membership costs and large packages can work poorly for small households.
- National brands: May be preferable when a shopper needs a particular formulation, dietary certification, package size or familiar taste.
Any serious price comparison should record the retailer, ZIP code, date and time, package size, regular or promotional price, unit-price calculation and delivery or membership fees. Without those details, “cheaper” is usually too broad a claim.
What Amazon’s quality claim does—and does not—show
Amazon says the launch assortment was rated four stars or higher on Amazon.com. That can provide a useful indication of customer reviews, but it is not the same as independent testing.

Star ratings do not by themselves establish nutritional quality, better taste, food-safety performance or superiority to a national brand. Shoppers should use the ingredient list, nutrition panel, allergen information and any relevant certifications for those questions.
Why Amazon launched the brand
Amazon’s stated immediate purpose is to simplify grocery discovery by bringing private-label products together under one name while offering low prices. Strategically, a unified brand may reduce confusion between Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly and give Amazon greater control over its grocery assortment, packaging and value message.
That interpretation is consistent with the consolidation, but it is analysis rather than a separately verified statement of Amazon’s internal strategy. The clearest factual description is that Amazon Grocery is a large private-label consolidation and value-positioning effort within Amazon’s broader grocery business.
What remains uncertain
Amazon’s announcement does not independently establish:
- That Amazon Grocery is cheaper than Walmart, Aldi, Costco, Target or every local supermarket
- That the full assortment is available nationwide
- That every former Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly product has already changed packaging
- That four-star ratings indicate healthier or objectively better food
- That the current price of any particular item remains below $5
Amazon also says its Amazon Grocery apple packaging uses 50% less plastic than previous packaging. That is a company packaging claim and should not be generalized to the entire product line.
