The Nifty’s reported 52-week low was an intraday level, not its closing value. Contemporary reports pointed to several pressures—including the RBI’s rate increase, higher crude prices, foreign investor selling, elevated US Treasury yields and global uncertainty—but did not establish one cause or rank their effects. This is a recap of the October 8 session, not live market coverage.
Where did the Sensex and Nifty close?
NDTV Profit reported the following closing figures for October 8, 2026:

| Index | Close | Change | Percentage change |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSE Sensex | 71,593.24 | Down 1,045.46 points | −1.44% |
| Nifty 50 | 22,231.80 | Down 371.25 points | −1.64% |
These are reported closes; the exact figures are attributed to NDTV Profit’s October 8 coverage. Point changes should not be compared as if the two indices had the same scale. The Nifty traded as low as approximately 22,179–22,181 during the session, a level reported as a 52-week low. It recovered slightly before closing at 22,231.80.
The weakness extended beyond the headline indices: NDTV Profit reported declines of more than 2% in both the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100, alongside losses across several sectoral indices. That indicates broad market pressure, not that every listed share fell.

Why did the stock market fall on October 8?
Reports cited a combination of policy, commodity, capital-flow and global-market concerns. They do not show that any one factor alone caused the decline, or quantify how much each contributed.
RBI raised its policy rate
On October 7, the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and changed its stance to “calibrated tightening.” The RBI resolution cited a less-benign inflation outlook and pressure from energy and commodity prices. A higher policy rate can weigh on equities by raising borrowing costs and influencing expectations for growth and future rates. The policy decision is confirmed by the RBI; its precise contribution to the next day’s market decline is not established by the available reports.
Crude prices added to inflation and cost concerns
News coverage linked rising crude prices to worries about inflation and business costs. NDTV Profit reported Brent crude above $104 a barrel during the session; that is an intraday figure cited by the outlet, not a verified settlement price here. For an oil-importing economy such as India, expensive crude can increase pressure on costs and inflation expectations, but that context alone does not prove it triggered the selloff.
Foreign investor selling was cited as pressure
Goodreturns and ET Now cited foreign institutional or foreign investor selling as one factor weighing on Indian shares. The reports reviewed do not provide a verified official flow total for October 8, so there is no session-specific amount to state here.
Global yields and uncertainty weighed on sentiment
Reports also pointed to elevated US Treasury yields, weakness in global markets and geopolitical concerns. These conditions can make investors more cautious about riskier assets, including equities. They were reported as part of the market backdrop, not demonstrated as a single trigger.

Losses spread across sectors and market sizes
Contemporary coverage described pressure across large, mid and small caps, with metals, realty, oil and gas and other sectors among those under strain. This breadth helps explain why the session was described as a broad selloff rather than a decline confined to one index or industry.

What the reports do—and do not—establish
The RBI’s rate decision and the reported index closes are specific events and figures. The explanations for the market move are analysts’ and news outlets’ accounts of concurrent pressures. The available reporting does not isolate a single, proven cause or establish a measurable ranking among them.
Best Value
Reports also gave different estimates of the total market-capitalisation loss: Goodreturns said more than ₹8 lakh crore, while NDTV Profit reported more than ₹11 lakh crore. Because those figures do not match and the calculation is not reconciled here, neither should be treated as a definitive total.
How to read the “52-week low” headline
A 52-week low refers to the lowest traded level in the preceding year, not necessarily the closing price. On October 8, coverage placed the Nifty’s intraday low around 22,179–22,181 and described it as a 52-week low; the index later closed at 22,231.80. Keeping the low and close separate avoids confusing the most extreme point of the session with where trading ended.
