Delta ordered 20 Airbus A350-1000s to fly long-haul routes and serve international hubs, and it has tied the order to international growth, more premium seats, more cargo capacity and the replacement of older aircraft. The -1000 seats more passengers than the smaller A350-900 in Airbus’s typical configurations. What Delta has not published is the internal financial and route-level calculation that led it to choose the larger model over additional -900s.
What Delta has said about the order
On January 12, 2024, Delta announced its first order for 20 A350-1000 aircraft. The airline already flew the smaller A350-900, so the -1000 introduced a second A350 type to its fleet. CEO Ed Bastian called the aircraft “the largest, most capable aircraft in Delta’s fleet” and described it as “an important step forward for our international expansion.”
On January 24, 2024, Delta framed the order as part of a fleet refresh and streamlining effort. The airline said the aircraft would primarily operate in long-haul markets and international hubs, replacing retiring planes and fueling growth. Delta also said the A350-1000 is more than 20% more fuel efficient than the planes it would replace. That is Delta’s own comparison, not an independently measured result for the -1000.
How the A350-1000 differs from the A350-900
The two models share a wide-body design and engine family, but the -1000 is longer and carries more passengers. The table uses Airbus’s typical three-class seat ranges and engine thrust figures from its October 2024 A350 factsheet.

Why a larger aircraft fits Delta’s plan
The published specifications explain what a larger aircraft can carry. Delta’s announcements explain what it wants to do with that capacity. Connecting the two is an inference, not a disclosed Delta decision.

Long-haul routes and international hubs
Delta says the A350’s range and performance support growth in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the South Pacific. Its fleet update names Taipei, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Riyadh as recently launched or announced A350 markets. Delta has not identified any of those services as A350-1000-only routes, so they should not be read as confirmed -1000 destinations.
More seats and cargo where demand supports them
A larger cabin spreads the cost of a long-haul flight across more passengers. That makes the -1000 most useful on routes where Delta expects enough demand to fill the extra seats, and less useful on thinner routes. Delta’s chief executive said the aircraft “complements our fleet and offers an elevated customer experience, with more premium seats and best-in-class amenities, as well as expanded cargo capabilities.” The premium and cargo gains are the reasons Delta gave; their size on any particular route has not been disclosed.

Fleet renewal and fuel efficiency
Delta’s 2024 sustainability report says it took delivery of 38 next-generation aircraft that year, including seven A350s. Those new deliveries averaged 28% greater fuel efficiency per seat mile than aircraft retired since 2019. That figure describes the year’s deliveries as a group. It is not a measured result for the A350-1000 specifically.

Delta’s 2026 fleet update says it expects to begin receiving the A350-1000s in early 2027. The same update projects that Delta’s A350 fleet will reach 79 aircraft once its additional A350-900 and other widebody orders are delivered. These are company plans and can change.

What remains unknown
Delta’s and Airbus’s public statements do not disclose:
- the purchase price or financing terms of the order;
- expected load factors or profitability by route;
- the cargo revenue the -1000 is expected to generate;
- a side-by-side financial comparison between the -1000 and buying more -900s.
Delta’s stated reasons are growth, premium capacity, cargo and fleet renewal. Anyone claiming a more specific financial motive is speculating.

Quick Recap
What this means if you book Delta flights
- Delta has not said which routes will receive A350-1000s first, so you cannot assume a specific route will be flown by one.
- Check the aircraft type and seat map when you book. Seat layouts can differ between the -900 and -1000 and may change before delivery.
- Planned cabin features such as the next-generation Delta One suite are not yet in passenger service and should be confirmed once aircraft enter service.
- Delta’s announcements do not address fares, so the order should not be treated as a signal of ticket prices.
