Why Alaska Airlines Is Using Boeing 787s for Seattle While Hawaiian Keeps Its A330s

Alaska's published plan puts Boeing 787-9s behind Seattle's long-haul international growth, while Hawaiian's A330s remain Honolulu-based. The public record does not show a dated transfer of specific Hawaiian 787s.

Alaska Airlines has not announced that it took over Hawaiian’s Boeing 787s aircraft by aircraft. What the company has published is a split in widebody roles. Its 787-9s are assigned to Seattle-origin long-haul international growth, and Hawaiian’s Airbus A330s stay based in Honolulu for flights to and from Hawaii. The 787 decision is a network-strategy choice, and the public record does not document a dated transfer of specific Hawaiian-operated 787s.

What Alaska says the 787s are for

In a May 12, 2025 announcement, Alaska said it would operate daily Seattle–Tokyo Narita flights. Those flights were being operated by Hawaiian Airlines with Hawaiian long-haul aircraft at the time. The same announcement said Seattle’s future international service would use Alaska’s growing fleet of Boeing 787-9s, and it set a goal of at least 12 long-haul international destinations from Seattle by 2030.

Two points in that announcement matter. The route’s current operator and its intended future fleet are different things. And the 2030 target is a company goal, not a published schedule or a count of confirmed routes.

What the A330s are for

Alaska describes its Airbus A330 fleet as based in Honolulu and as remaining part of the Hawaiian brand for flights to and from Hawaii. This is the clearest distinction in the company’s own description of the two widebody types: the 787s point toward Seattle, and the A330s point toward Honolulu-centered service.

Nothing in the cited Alaska statements says Hawaiian no longer needs widebody aircraft, or that its Hawaii service is ending. That reading would go beyond what the company has published.

How the merger fits in

Alaska Air Group completed its Hawaiian acquisition on September 18, 2024. The completion announcement counted two Boeing 787s in the combined fleet of about 350 aircraft.

On October 29, 2025, Alaska announced that the FAA had issued a single operating certificate covering Alaska and Hawaiian. The companies said customers would continue to experience distinct Alaska and Hawaiian brands. A shared certificate places both airlines’ operations under one regulatory framework. It does not, by itself, retire the Hawaiian brand.

The fleet numbers, dated

The figures below come from different kinds of source: a completion announcement, a route announcement, a regulatory update, a plan announcement, and a group fleet page. They should not be read as one continuous record.

Date Figure or event Source What it does and does not establish

Comparing the two widebody roles

The seat layout is the only cabin detail the company publishes for either type. Without a published A330 layout, this comparison cannot judge passenger comfort.

The January 2026 order and the 17-aircraft figure

On January 7, 2026, Alaska announced five additional 787s, intended to be the -10 variant. The company said they would bring its firm future 787 fleet to 17, with five already operating, and it linked the order to its plan for at least 12 long-haul international destinations from Seattle by 2030.

The totals do not fully reconcile from the figures alone. Five aircraft in service plus five new -10s account for ten, and the cited announcement does not itemize the remaining firm aircraft. Readers should treat 17 as the company’s own firm-order figure, not as a delivery schedule.

On the branding side, Alaska Air Group CEO and President Ben Minicucci said in a 2026 statement about the airline’s new global livery:

That quote describes Alaska’s brand and international ambition. It does not explain how any particular 787 was assigned.

What the public record does not show

  • A serial-number list showing which individual Hawaiian-operated 787s changed operating assignment, or a date by which all of them had moved to Alaska.
  • An independent study of unit costs, fuel use or savings from moving 787s between hubs. The published figures are company plans and fleet counts.
  • A passenger-experience comparison between the 787-9 and the A330-200, because the A330 seat layout is not stated in the cited sources.
  • Any evidence that Hawaiian’s widebody service to Hawaii is ending.

Because fleet deployment, aircraft counts, delivery timing and route plans can change, the July 2026 snapshot and the 2026 order figures should be checked against the airline’s latest fleet page before they are cited as current.
