China Southern said it left SkyTeam to pursue its own development strategy and adapt to changing models of airline cooperation—not because it publicly blamed the alliance or a rival. It announced in December 2018 that it would not renew its membership, spent 2019 transitioning, and officially left on 1 January 2020. The airline instead emphasized flexible partnerships with individual carriers, while keeping some cooperation with former SkyTeam members.
What reason did China Southern give?
In its 11 December 2018 announcement, China Southern said it would not renew its SkyTeam membership, citing “its strategic development, the changing trends of the global aviation industry and the evolution of alliances.” The announcement framed the move as a strategic choice.
The company’s exchange filing described the decision as based on its development strategy and the need to align with new cooperation models in the global aviation industry. It said it would explore partnerships with airlines around the world and promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation. The filing does not identify a specific airline or alliance as the cause.

China Southern described its departure as an important strategic decision and said it would develop new strategic partnerships while maintaining good relationships with SkyTeam airlines. Its later filing records examples of that approach:

In its 2019 corporate-responsibility report, China Southern described a broader effort to build a global “circle of friends” through equity investment, joint ventures and cooperation across alliances. The report presents partnerships as a way to connect networks without relying solely on full alliance membership.
Did the exit end benefits with SkyTeam airlines?
No. China Southern’s 24 December 2019 notice said mileage earning and redemption, along with elite services, would continue with listed partners including Air France, Delta, KLM, Korean Air, China Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Aeroflot and Xiamen Airlines. The notice also said the airline would introduce “CZ Priority” on its own flights from 1 January 2020, replacing “SkyPriority” while preserving priority check-in, baggage, boarding and lounge privileges for qualifying customers. The notice lists the arrangements.

What did the decision mean for travelers?
Leaving an alliance changes the default network of shared benefits; it does not automatically end every agreement between the departing airline and former alliance partners. Bilateral arrangements can set different rules from alliance-wide benefits, so travelers should check the details for the particular trip rather than assume that a benefit carries over.
- Check which airline operates the flight and which carrier issued the ticket.
- Confirm whether the flight is covered by a codeshare or other partnership.
- Verify frequent-flyer earning and redemption rules for that airline, fare and route.
- Check lounge access and priority-service eligibility for the specific itinerary and status level.
Was China Southern planning to join another alliance?
The company material cited here describes a strategy of bilateral and multilateral partnerships, but does not establish a confirmed plan to join another alliance. Nor does it support claims that a rivalry with China Eastern or a failure by SkyTeam caused the departure.
