Delta’s A350-900 retrofit story involves two different projects, not a single fleetwide cabin replacement. In 2023, Delta selected Airbus Services to rework nine A350s that had flown for another airline, aligning their cabins and systems with Delta’s international fleet. A separate, newer cabin design began appearing on A350s in 2025. Delta has not disclosed how many A350-900s have received that newer design or when the rollout will be complete.
Why Delta began retrofitting A350-900s
The first project addressed aircraft entering Delta’s fleet after service with another airline. On January 23, 2023, Airbus said Delta had selected Airbus Services to retrofit nine such A350s. The stated aim, in Delta’s words, was to harmonize their cabins with the rest of its international fleet.
That incoming-aircraft context explains why Delta could be retrofitting A350s while also operating aircraft with different cabin standards: the nine planes needed modifications to meet Delta’s cabin-experience, connectivity, avionics and systems requirements. The announcement does not say that every Delta A350-900 was included. Airbus’s 2023 announcement called the work one of the largest and most comprehensive A350 cabin upgrade programs in the world.
What the nine-aircraft retrofit covered
Airbus described a nose-to-tail modification, not just a change to passenger seats. The planned work included cabin equipment as well as technical changes needed to bring the aircraft to Delta’s specifications.

- Technical configuration: connectivity, avionics and other systems requirements.
- Engineering support: Airbus said it would provide service bulletins, engineering drawings, retrofit kits and technical assistance.
Delta’s then-vice president of Fleet, Kristen Bojko, said the partnership would harmonize the cabins with Delta’s international fleet and help it continue delivering the premium experience customers value. The announcement supports standardization as the purpose; it does not identify a particular aircraft age or maintenance event as the reason for the decision.
How that project differs from Delta’s newer cabin design
Delta announced a modern cabin design for its fleet in 2024 and forecast an A350 debut in early 2025. In its March-quarter 2025 results, Delta said aircraft with the new design had begun flying on A350s and Boeing 757s, citing new seating materials, enhanced lighting and a refreshed color palette. Those reports establish that the rollout started, but do not give an A350-900 conversion count or a completion date.

The projects may both be described as cabin upgrades, but the evidence does not establish that they are one program or that the newer design replaced the original nine-aircraft work. The nine-aircraft project had a defined incoming-aircraft population and included technical modifications; the newer design was a broader interior rollout with no published A350-900 completion total.
Don’t confuse the A350-900 with the A350-1000 suite announcement
Delta’s April 2026 announcement about its next-generation Delta One suite concerns new A350-1000 aircraft, expected to begin arriving in early 2027. It separately discusses planned suite upgrades for A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft. Features described for the A350-1000 include a longer flat bed, pillow-top and memory-foam cushioning, storage and a 24-inch screen. They are not evidence that these features are being retrofitted onto the A350-900.

Airbus says initial A350 cabin retrofits typically happen after about eight years of service, but that is general guidance, not an explanation of Delta’s decision for these aircraft. Airbus also describes retrofit projects ranging from catalogue equipment to bespoke upgrades, with support for cabin layout, certification and engineering. Airbus’s cabin retrofit overview does not provide a Delta-specific schedule or establish the age of the nine aircraft when Delta selected the work.
What travelers can and can’t tell from the announcements
Delta announced that the Atlanta–Santiago route would use an A350-900 from May 3, 2025, with Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin; that route-specific configuration had 40 Delta Premium Select seats. It is an example for that route, not a count or layout applicable to every Delta A350-900. Delta’s route announcement does not establish which interior design is fitted to every aircraft serving it.

For a particular trip, check the aircraft and seat map linked to your itinerary close to departure. This can help you see the configuration currently associated with the flight, but it is not a guarantee that the assigned aircraft will not change. Delta’s published announcements do not identify every converted aircraft or offer a definitive A350-900 retrofit completion date.

On January 28, 2026, Airbus reported that Delta ordered 15 additional A350-900s as part of a 31-aircraft widebody order. This is a procurement announcement, not a cabin retrofit update; it does not change what is known about the nine incoming aircraft or the progress of the newer interior rollout.
