No reliable source shows that Daniel Dubois lost half of his purse in his fight with Oleksandr Usyk. The bout took place at Wembley on July 19, 2025, and Usyk stopped Dubois in the fifth round. Nothing in the official records or the reporting we could verify describes a 50% deduction from Dubois’s earnings. The claim is common in fight-week chatter, but it does not hold up as a fact, and the reasons it is hard to verify say a lot about how boxing purses actually work.
What the official record confirms
Three kinds of source describe this fight, and none of them mentions a purse split or a deduction.
- The World Boxing Council event listing (2025) names the bout Oleksandr Usyk vs. Daniel Dubois, labels it an undisputed heavyweight championship, gives July 19, 2025 as the date, lists Queensberry as promoter, and gives Wembley, UK as the venue.
- The World Boxing Council’s post-fight report (2025) says the fight ended in the fifth round and that Usyk stopped Dubois to recover the title Dubois held.
- The World Boxing Association resolution dated February 28, 2025 covers mandatory title defenses, contenders and title status. It does not address money paid to either fighter after the bout.
A sanctioning body’s record shows who won, where and when. It does not show what a fighter was contracted to receive or what reached his bank account.
Where the figure that sounds like proof comes from
Before the fight, AS reported a combined purse of $203.5 million. That number is a media-reported pre-fight figure, not an official contract or a post-fight settlement statement. It describes the total money available to both fighters, not Dubois’s share, so it cannot by itself show how much either man was owed.

Even if a reader accepts the $203.5 million figure at face value, it does not tell you what Dubois received. Getting from a combined pre-fight number to a fighter’s actual pay requires a contract, a split, and a payment record. None of those was published in the sources reviewed.
Three money figures that get confused
Most purse arguments mix up three different numbers. Keep them apart and most of the confusion disappears.

A claim that a fighter “lost half his purse” needs at least two of these figures and a documented reason for the gap. The claim about Dubois has neither.
What a purse bid is, and what it is not
A purse bid is a sanctioning-body process used to set the financial terms of a future bout when the fighters and promoters cannot agree. It is not a penalty applied after a fight, and it does not reduce a fighter’s earnings from a completed bout.

The British Broadcasting Corporation’s sport service (BBC Sport) reported on July 24, 2025 that Usyk had been ordered to negotiate with Joseph Parker. The report said the WBO would order purse-bid proceedings if the two sides failed to agree within 30 days. That is the mechanism working as designed for a future contest. It has no bearing on what Dubois was paid for the fight against Usyk.

If you see a headline like this one, these checks will tell you quickly whether it rests on evidence.

- Look for the bout contract or a named split between the two fighters. A percentage without a source is not a finding.
- Check whether the figure is gross or net. A gross purse can be large while the net receipt is much smaller, and the two are often reported as if they were the same.
- Check the source’s authority. A promoter’s statement, a sanctioning body’s official record and a media estimate carry very different weight.
- Check the timing. A pre-fight estimate is not a post-fight settlement, and a figure reported before a bout can be revised afterward.
- Check whether the source says what the deduction is for. Taxes, manager fees, trainer fees and sanctioning fees may all apply, and they depend on private agreements and the fighter’s tax residence, none of which is public for Dubois.
The bottom line on the Dubois claim
The fight happened as described, and Usyk won by fifth-round stoppage. The claim that Dubois immediately lost half his purse is not established by the official records or by the reporting we could verify. The pre-fight $203.5 million figure is a combined, media-reported estimate and cannot confirm a share, a payment or a deduction. Anyone repeating the 50% figure should be able to name the contract or payment statement behind it, and none was identified.
What remains unknown is the private contract and the payment history. Those documents would settle the question, and they are not public.

In the meantime, the lesson is practical: when a fighter’s purse is reported as a single headline number, treat it as a starting point and ask which figure it is, who measured it and when.
