Delta and Boeing agreed in 2016 to cancel an 18-aircraft order for Boeing 787-8s that Delta had inherited from Northwest Airlines. The order had been affected by delivery uncertainty for years: Delta disclosed in 2008 that Boeing could not meet the contractual schedule, then said in 2010 that it had reaffirmed the order while deferring deliveries to 2020–2022. The available public record does not establish a single definitive internal business reason for the 2016 cancellation.
What happened to the original 787 order?
The commitment was for 18 Boeing 787-8 aircraft. It originated with Northwest Airlines and came to Delta through the airlines’ merger. In its 2008 Form 10-K, Delta said Boeing had informed it that Boeing could not meet the contractual delivery schedule and that the two companies were discussing the situation.
Delta’s 2010 aircraft-order disclosure shows that the order was not immediately abandoned: Delta reaffirmed it, while moving the delivery window from 2008–2010 to 2020–2022. Delta and Boeing ultimately agreed to cancel the order in December 2016.
What reason for the cancellation is documented?
The clearest documented issue is the extended delivery uncertainty. Delta’s 2008 filing explicitly records Boeing’s notice that it could not meet the contractual schedule, and Delta’s 2010 disclosure records a substantial deferral. That history supports describing the order as a long-delayed legacy commitment that the companies eventually unwound.

It does not, by itself, prove the precise strategic or financial rationale behind the 2016 decision. The cancellation-era reports said the agreement’s terms were not publicly released. The available material therefore does not establish a cancellation payment, a conversion of the order into other aircraft, or another specific contractual arrangement. Nor does it establish that Delta canceled specifically because it chose Airbus, because of a particular aircraft’s economics, or because of Boeing quality issues that became prominent later.
How the two Delta 787 decisions differ
Delta’s 2026 agreement for 787-10s is a separate purchase made in a different fleet-planning context. It shows that the 2016 cancellation was not a permanent rejection of the 787 family, but it does not explain why Delta and Boeing ended the earlier 787-8 commitment.

| Legacy order | 18 Boeing 787-8s | Originally associated with Northwest; delivery schedule problems reported in 2008; deliveries deferred in 2010 to 2020–2022; canceled by agreement in December 2016 | Delta documented Boeing’s inability to meet the contractual schedule and later reaffirmed and deferred the order. The precise internal reason for cancellation and the agreement’s terms were not publicly established in the cited record. |
| New order | 30 Boeing 787-10s, with options for up to 30 additional aircraft | Agreement announced in January 2026; deliveries scheduled to begin in 2031 | Delta described the order as supporting international growth and fleet renewal. These are stated reasons for the new purchase, not for the 2016 cancellation. |
What Delta says about its newer purchase
In its January 2026 announcement, Delta framed the 787-10 order around international growth and fleet renewal. CEO Ed Bastian said: “Delta is building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come.” That statement concerns the 2026 order; it should not be read as an explanation of the 2016 cancellation.

Delta canceled a Northwest-origin 787-8 order after years of documented delivery delays and deferrals, but the public evidence cited here does not identify one definitive internal reason for the 2016 agreement. Delta’s subsequent purchase of 787-10s, with deliveries scheduled to start in 2031, is a distinct decision—not a reversal that fills in the missing rationale.
