American said it retired the Boeing 757 to simplify its fleet: operating fewer aircraft types, it said, would reduce complexity and bring forward cost savings and efficiencies. Delta and United took a different path and still listed 757s in their fleets at December 31, 2025. Their filings establish that they kept the aircraft, but do not give a single 757-specific reason why. The clearest explanation is a difference in fleet-renewal timing and choices, with American’s pandemic-era acceleration adding to a broader simplification effort.
What American said about retiring the 757
American announced accelerated retirements in 2020 as part of a wider set of fleet changes. Its explanation was operational simplification: “These changes remove operating complexity and will bring forward cost savings and efficiencies associated with operating fewer aircraft types.” That is the airline’s stated rationale, not a published comparison of 757 costs against other aircraft.
American had 34 Boeing 757-200s on January 1, 2020. The airline said they flew mostly mainland domestic and Hawaii routes, with some transatlantic and Latin American service. The announcement’s scope matters: the 757 retirement was one element of a broader fleet adjustment, rather than evidence that the pandemic alone caused the decision. American’s documents do not quantify how much demand, age, maintenance, aircraft economics or future planning individually influenced it. American’s 2020 retirement announcement describes its rationale and the fleet at the time.
What American planned to fly instead
In its 2020 stockholder Q&A, American said it expected Boeing 737 MAX, Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft to replace 757 flying. The company then expected deliveries to begin in 2023; that was a forecast made in 2020, not a statement of the actual delivery schedule. American’s 2020 stockholder Q&A records that plan.

Subsequent company reporting provides context for the broader renewal strategy. American’s 2024 sustainability report says it replaced many retired aircraft with A321neo, 737 MAX and 787 aircraft. It reports mainline fuel use of 13.9 gallons per 1,000 available seat miles in 2024, compared with 15.4 in 2014. Those figures describe the mainline fleet’s reported fuel use across the stated years; they do not isolate the effect of retiring the 757. The report also says fleet renewal replaced older, less fuel-efficient and noisier aircraft with newer types. American’s 2024 sustainability report gives the company’s fleet-renewal account and efficiency figures.
American’s April 2026 active mainline fleet count lists A320-family and 737-family aircraft, with no 757s. It says the A321XLR entered JFK–LAX service in December 2025 and JFK–Edinburgh international service in March 2026. These later service examples show where the aircraft appeared in American’s network; they do not establish that every former 757 route transferred to an XLR. American’s fleet count is updated April 2026.

How Delta and United differed
Both rivals still reported 757 fleets at year-end 2025. The figures below come from their 2025 Form 10-K filings and are dated fleet snapshots, not live counts.
| Airline | 757 fleet at Dec. 31, 2025 | What the cited filings establish |
|---|---|---|
| American | No 757s in its April 2026 active mainline fleet count | American announced accelerated retirement in 2020 and named 737 MAX, A321neo and A321XLR as expected replacements for 757 flying. |
| Delta | 92: 76 757-200s and 16 757-300s | Average ages were 27.1 years for the 757-200 fleet and 22.9 years for the 757-300 fleet at year-end 2025. The filing describes investment in newer aircraft for customer experience, premium products, operating economics and fuel efficiency, but does not give a 757-specific retention rationale. |
| United | 61: 40 757-200s and 21 757-300s | United also reported commitments for 119 A321neos and 50 A321XLRs at year-end 2025. The filing does not say that all of those aircraft are 757 replacements or specify why United retained its 757s. |
The Delta figures and its fleet-renewal discussion are in the Delta 2025 Form 10-K. United’s fleet and aircraft commitments appear in the United 2025 Form 10-K.

What the comparison does—and does not—show
The filings support a contrast in decisions and timing: American accelerated its 757 exit while pursuing fleet simplification, whereas Delta and United continued to operate 757s through the end of 2025 while also renewing their fleets. United’s substantial A321neo and A321XLR pipeline shows that keeping 757s coexisted with ordering newer narrowbodies; it does not prove those orders were all replacements for them.
The available company documents do not provide comparable airline-by-airline figures for 757 operating costs, utilization, remaining useful life or route profitability. They therefore do not show that American’s 757s crossed a particular cost threshold, that Delta or United had better maintenance economics, or that the 757 was universally more economical for one carrier. The defensible answer is narrower: American publicly cited reduced complexity and expected efficiencies as it accelerated retirement and planned replacement flying; Delta and United retained their own subfleets longer, but their filings do not identify one specific reason for doing so.
