Kansas remains a strongly Republican state, but its 2026 U.S. Senate race is drawing unusual attention because polling listed a close contest between Republican incumbent Roger Marshall and Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton. Those surveys show competitiveness, not a dependable forecast: their published entries omit key methodological details. Republican spending reservations add evidence that the seat is being defended seriously, but do not establish who will win.
Why is Kansas’s Senate race close in 2026?
The surprise is the gap between Kansas’s recent Republican voting record and the apparent closeness of this contest. The Associated Press reported that Donald Trump carried Kansas by nearly 16 percentage points in 2024 and that Marshall won his first Senate race by more than 11 points in 2020. AP also noted that a Democrat has not won a Kansas Senate race since 1932 and had not come within 10 points since 1974. These figures provide historical context; they do not mean every part of Kansas votes alike or that every election follows the same pattern.
Several factors may be contributing to the race’s competitiveness, but the available reporting does not measure their separate effects. AP reported that higher fuel costs and other economic concerns made Kansas more competitive than Republicans had expected. It did not quantify how much those concerns, the candidates, or the national political climate have affected the contest.
Who is running against Roger Marshall?
Marshall is the Republican incumbent. His Democratic challenger, Adam Hamilton, is a pastor who leads the nation’s largest United Methodist Church, according to AP. The same report said former Republican governors Mike Hayden and Bill Graves endorsed Hamilton—an unusual signal of cross-party support, though not evidence by itself of how voters will decide.

In an October 2, 2026, AP report, Sen. Tim Scott, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called Kansas “a very competitive state.” He said he expected Marshall to win but that it would be “closer than I want it to be.”
What do Kansas Senate polls show?
Election.org lists two September 2026 likely-voter surveys with Hamilton ahead by two points. The entries point to a close race, but the missing methodological information makes it impossible to treat either difference as a statistically established lead.

Do not combine the results into an average or read the two-point margins as precise measures of the race. The surveys have different field dates and sample sizes, and their listings omit information needed to assess their precision. Election.org says it displays reported survey results rather than an average or forecast. The available entries also do not establish which voter groups may be driving movement.
Why are Republicans spending money in Kansas?
National Republicans are treating the seat as one that needs defending. AP reported on October 2, 2026, citing AdImpact, that the Senate Leadership Fund had reserved nearly $8.2 million in advertising to support Marshall over the following month. The same report said Marshall had reserved another $2.3 million and received $500,000 from other groups; Hamilton had reserved $590,000 and received slightly more than $556,000 in outside help.

These are dated figures, not a final accounting of campaign spending or total fundraising. An advertising reservation is not necessarily an amount already spent, and reported outside help is distinct from a candidate’s campaign receipts. AP also reported that Republicans shifted cash from North Carolina to Kansas as the Senate map changed. That indicates national attention and concern about protecting the seat—not that Marshall is certain to lose.
Can a Democrat win a Senate seat in Kansas?
A Democratic victory is possible, but the available evidence does not make it the expected outcome or show that Kansas has become a reliably blue state. The recent Republican margins are substantial, while the September polls suggest the 2026 matchup may be more competitive than that baseline would imply. Their incomplete methodological disclosures prevent a confident estimate of how close the race is.

An August 23, 2026, Axios report said Cook Political Report had moved Kansas from “solid R” to “likely R” at that time. Axios also reported that Democratic Senate Majority PAC polling showed Marshall ahead by one point, but its reviewed article did not provide the poll’s full methodology. Those are dated descriptions, not a current race rating or a substitute for transparent polling details.

Kansas’s 2026 primary took place on August 4, and the general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026, according to the Kansas Secretary of State’s candidate information. The state lists one U.S. Senate seat among the offices elected in 2026. Republican and Democratic candidates run in the primary; recognized parties other than those two, currently Libertarian and United Kansas, nominate by caucus or convention; independent candidates file by petition. Check the Secretary of State’s current election information for the qualified ballot and any administrative updates.
