Cracker Barrel’s August 2025 logo redesign removed the familiar Old Timer figure and the words “Old Country Store,” replacing them with a simpler wordmark. The change became a partisan online flashpoint: some conservative critics called it “woke,” social-media users invoked Sydney Sweeney, and Rep. Byron Donalds tied his criticism to a personal story about finding faith in a restaurant parking lot. Cracker Barrel restored its old logo the next day, then later suspended planned restaurant remodels.
What changed in Cracker Barrel’s logo?
Unveiled on August 18, 2025, the new mark removed the illustration of the Old Timer leaning on a barrel and dropped the “Old Country Store” wording. It left a simplified Cracker Barrel wordmark. The company called it a “fifth evolution” of the logo and said it was a callback to the original design and the iconic barrel shape, according to Axios.
The mark was part of a broader effort to modernize restaurants, including brighter spaces and updated seating, lighting and bookcases. CEO Julie Felss Masino told ABC News on August 19, “Cracker Barrel needs to feel like the Cracker Barrel for today and for tomorrow.” The company said recognizable features such as rocking chairs, fireplaces and the peg game would remain. ABC News reported the redesign and the company’s explanation.
Why did critics call the redesign “woke”?
Critics framed the removal of the Old Timer and “Old Country Store” language as a retreat from the chain’s traditional identity. Some prominent MAGA-aligned voices joined the criticism, and former President Donald Trump publicly urged the company to reverse course. The reaction reported by Axios and The Guardian shows how the change became a political story; social-media posts do not establish that all, or even most, customers opposed it.

Cracker Barrel initially defended the mark. On August 25, the company apologized for how it had communicated the changes, saying, “You’ve also shown us that we could’ve done a better job sharing who we are and who we’ll always be.” It also said Uncle Herschel would remain in restaurants, on menus and on merchandise. That statement expressed regret about the messaging while the company was still standing by the redesign, as the Associated Press reported.
The following day, after criticism continued, Cracker Barrel said it would restore the old logo. The reversal was a separate step after the August 25 communications apology, not an immediate response to the first backlash. The Guardian covered the reversal.

What does Sydney Sweeney have to do with Cracker Barrel?
Sweeney was brought into the online discussion by users suggesting that Cracker Barrel use her in its branding or replace the Old Timer with her. The chatter followed conservative support for Sweeney during a separate American Eagle “great genes” jeans-ad controversy. The Daily Beast reported the suggestions. The reports do not establish that Sweeney endorsed Cracker Barrel, that the company approached her, or that a partnership was planned.
Why did Byron Donalds mention Jesus?
Rep. Byron Donalds connected his criticism to his own account of working at a Cracker Barrel in Tallahassee while he was in college. In an August 21 post on X, he wrote, “I even gave my life to Christ in their parking lot,” and described the redesign as “woke.” This was Donalds’s personal story and political framing, not a company religious campaign; The Daily Beast reported his remarks.

What happened after the logo reversal?
On September 9, 2025, Cracker Barrel said it was suspending restaurant remodels, concluding that the modern design did not reflect what customers loved about the chain. The Guardian reported that the new interior look had been tested at four of the chain’s 660 locations. The company said the suspended plan would not change existing, unremodeled restaurants and emphasized vintage Americana, fireplaces, rocking chairs, peg games, gift-shop items and antiques. Those are the company’s stated view of the design and its plans, as reported by The Guardian; they are not evidence of a representative customer survey.

The available figures show timing, not a proven cause. The Associated Press reported that shares were down more than 10% from their level at the August 18, 2025 logo introduction; Axios separately described an approximately 10% intraday decline on August 21. These are different reporting snapshots, not one precise combined measurement. Neither establishes that the logo change alone caused the market movement. The sources cited here provide no causal study or independently established estimate of the redesign’s effect on sales or share value.

In a later development, Axios reported on July 27, 2026, that CEO Julie Masino would step down as CEO and board member effective August 10, with David Deno taking over. Masino was to remain an adviser until October 9, 2026; as of October 8, that announced adviser period had not yet ended. Axios also reported that same-store restaurant sales fell 2.5% in the first 11 weeks of the latest fiscal quarter. That dated figure does not show that the 2025 logo controversy caused the decline.
