Coventry City sold Viktor Gyökeres to Sporting CP in July 2023 for a fee reported to be close to £20 million. That made it a club-record sale, but the often-repeated “£1m in, £20m out” calculation is not a verified net-profit figure: the exact permanent fee Coventry paid, deal costs and any later sell-on proceeds are not established by the available sources.
What Coventry received for Gyökeres
When Sporting CP confirmed Gyökeres’s signing on 13 July 2023, BBC Sport reported the transfer fee as close to £20 million and said it surpassed Coventry’s previous record sale: the £13 million received for Robbie Keane in 2000. The figure is reported, rather than a fee disclosed by Coventry or Sporting in their announcements. BBC Sport’s transfer report gives the estimate and record comparison.
Sporting’s official announcement confirmed the signing and a contract through 2028, but did not publish the fee. It did include a €100 million release clause; that is a contractual clause, not the amount Sporting paid Coventry.
Did Coventry make £20 million profit?
Not on the evidence available. A sale fee is not the same as profit. To calculate net profit, a reader would need the amount Coventry paid to acquire Gyökeres permanently, the guaranteed proceeds from Sporting, any bonuses or transaction costs, and any later sell-on income. The sources cited here do not provide a complete accounting of those figures.

Gyökeres initially joined Coventry on loan from Brighton in January 2021 and moved permanently later that year. Sporting Life’s transfer report gives that timeline and describes the sale fee as believed to be around £20 million, but does not verify an exact permanent acquisition fee. Consequently, the headline’s £1 million purchase figure and £20 million “profit” should be treated as shorthand, not as a confirmed net-profit calculation.
Why the transfer was seen as a major deal
The reported fee comfortably set a new club record, while Gyökeres had become a high-impact player for Coventry. Sporting’s signing announcement credited him with 22 goals and 12 assists in 50 Coventry appearances in his final season. Across his Coventry spell, Sporting Life reported 43 goals in 116 appearances. Those figures cover different periods and should not be conflated.

Coventry executive chairman Doug King described the completed transfer as “right for all parties concerned” after a long discussion, in a statement reported by FotMob. Before the sale, King had also said he was “quite calm” about the possibility of losing Gyökeres, who had a year left on his Coventry contract, according to BBC Sport. That earlier comment is context about the club’s position, not evidence of the eventual fee or its profit.

Coventry also had a contingent share of a future transfer gain. RTP, citing Sporting’s disclosure to the market regulator, reported that Coventry’s share was reduced from 15% to 10% after contractual objectives worth €2 million were achieved and Sporting exercised a corresponding €1 million option.

This describes a change in the terms for a possible future transfer gain; it does not establish that Coventry later received a particular amount. Without the relevant transfer details and payment accounting, the sell-on terms cannot be added to the reported 2023 fee to produce a reliable profit total.
