What happened on February 23, 2024?
A Reuters-syndicated report described corn and soybean futures in Chicago as edging up after prices reached three-year lows. Buyers were attracted by the lower prices, while the prospect of plentiful supplies remained a restraint on further advances. The contemporaneous report does not give exact contract prices, daily gains, or the precise dates and levels of those lows, so those figures cannot be established from it.
Why can prices rise without a trend reversal?
A sharp decline can prompt bargain buying: traders who see prices as low may buy futures, providing short-term support. But that buying does not necessarily change the amount of grain available or the pace of demand. In the February 2024 account, abundant supplies were the counterweight to the bounce.
For a recovery to look more durable, the advance would need to persist and be consistent with changes in supply, demand, or market expectations—not simply follow a low. Relevant evidence can include stocks, crop estimates, export activity, feed and ethanol demand for corn, soybean crush demand, and whether a government report differs from what traders expected. These are indicators to assess together, not proof that any one factor caused a price move.

How to read crop-report reactions
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) publishes historical price reactions for corn, soybeans, wheat, and cotton around Crop Production and Grain Stocks reports. Its data structure includes closing prices before a report and reactionary prices one day and one week afterward. The historical series can help readers examine how prices behaved around releases, but it does not establish that a report caused the move.
NASS cautions: “This report does not imply that NASS reports are solely responsible for changes to the price level for commodities referenced in the publication. Later market moves are separate episodes
Events in 2026 illustrate why a later rally or decline should not be treated as evidence about what caused the February 2024 bounce. They occurred on different dates and had their own reported drivers.
August 2026: estimates and demand supported futures
CME Group said corn and soybean futures rose in August amid supply and demand influences. It cited corn and soybean yield estimates and corn ending-stock estimates below industry expectations as contributors to bullish sentiment. For soybeans, it also pointed to strong domestic crush margins and steady international purchases; soybean futures gained over 8% that month, according to CME Group’s September 2026 market update.

September 30, 2026: larger corn stocks pressured prices
S&P Global Energy reported that USDA’s revised September 1 corn stocks were 2.095 billion bushels, above trade expectations. December corn futures fell 21.25 cents to $5.0075 per bushel. The same account reported soybean stocks of 315 million bushels and a 4.75-cent decline in November soybean futures to 1,293 cents per bushel. These figures are from that dated report, not from February 2024. S&P Global Energy’s September 30 account attributes pressure to the larger-than-expected corn stocks figure.
October 2026: harvest delays supported a modest rebound
Farm Futures reported a modest recovery from recent lows on October 6, 2026, after heavy rain slowed harvest. As of the preceding Sunday, U.S. corn harvest was 23% complete versus a 27% five-year average for that date; soybean harvest was 25% complete versus a 33% average. The report said delayed harvest and tighter nearby soybean supplies supported buying, while expectations for USDA yield estimates and resumed fieldwork could limit gains. What to check before calling a bounce a recovery
- Date and contract: Identify which futures contract rose and when. A move in one contract or session is not automatically a broad, sustained market trend.
- Persistence: Check whether prices continued higher after the initial bounce, rather than treating one session as confirmation.
- Supply: Consider crop estimates, stocks, harvest progress, and nearby availability.
- Demand: For corn, follow relevant feed, ethanol, and export indicators; for soybeans, consider exports and crush demand where reported.
- Expectations: Compare report figures with trade expectations. A number’s market impact can depend on whether it surprises traders, not only on its absolute size.
The February 23, 2024 report supports a narrow conclusion: bargain buying lifted futures after three-year lows, while plentiful supplies limited the outlook for gains. The available account does not establish whether that bounce developed into a sustained rally.
