Adyen and Global Payments both support online and in-person payment acceptance, but they are not interchangeable packages. Adyen presents a unified payments, data, and financial-products platform with services for enterprises and software platforms. Global Payments serves enterprises, platforms, and small businesses, and its business changed substantially when it completed its Worldpay acquisition and divested Issuer Solutions on January 9, 2026. The right choice depends on your markets, channels, platform responsibilities, integration needs, and written commercial terms—not a universal winner.

How Adyen and Global Payments differ

The simplest distinction is in how each provider presents its offerings. Adyen emphasizes a connected platform spanning payments, data, and financial products. Global Payments presents a broader portfolio organized around enterprise merchants, software platforms, and SMBs. For a buyer, the practical question is which specific product and operating arrangement fits the business—not just which corporate name appears on a comparison page.

Software platforms and marketplaces Documented functions include seller onboarding and verification, processing, split payments, holding funds until payout, payouts and transfers, risk management, and reporting. Adyen Platforms documentation Offers several platform operating models, from a managed integrated-payments route to arrangements that give a software platform more responsibility for merchant experience, underwriting, pricing, and the payment stack. What Global Payments’ Worldpay deal changes

Global Payments completed its acquisition of Worldpay and divested Issuer Solutions on January 9, 2026. After the transaction, the company reported a combined scale of more than 6 million merchant locations, approximately 94 billion transactions annually across more than 175 countries and 153 currencies, and $3.7 trillion in annual payment volume. Those are company-reported scale figures, not evidence that its service quality is better than Adyen’s or that every product is available in every market. Global Payments transaction materials

The company’s second-quarter 2026 filing describes Enterprise, Platforms, and SMB segments. Because the transaction and integration are recent, confirm the current product name, contracting entity, migration route, and servicing arrangements for the exact offer being quoted. Which provider may fit your business model?

Large or multinational merchant

Compare the specific countries, local acquiring needs, payment methods, settlement currencies, channels, and support arrangements in your deployment. Adyen publishes claims about global processing and historical platform uptime, but those are provider statements, not a like-for-like independent comparison. Ask each provider to specify what applies to your entity, markets, and contract.

Retailer selling online and in person

List the systems that need to share payment data—such as ecommerce, point of sale, and back-office tools—and determine whether a cross-channel view is necessary. Adyen documents Unified Commerce as a way to consolidate payment data from customer-facing and back-end systems; its stated availability varies by region and use case. Global Payments describes omnichannel, ecommerce, and in-person acceptance for platforms, while its wider merchant services include POS and related commerce services. Verify the product and integration path for your business rather than assuming a capability is universal.

  • A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.

SaaS platform or marketplace

Compare operating responsibility, not just API availability. Decide who will onboard and verify sellers, underwrite them, manage risk, set fees, handle support, split transactions, control payouts, and produce reporting. Adyen documents platform functions such as onboarding, verification, split payments, payouts, and risk management. Global Payments describes multiple platform models that assign different levels of ownership to the provider and software platform. The model you choose affects your operational workload and control.

Small business

Global Payments explicitly serves SMBs with payment, POS, business-management software, and related commerce services. Adyen’s product materials focus on enterprise and industry use cases; the relevant question is whether Adyen offers a suitable product, sales route, and support arrangement for your business in your country. Compare the actual package and service obligations rather than assuming that a broad global platform is automatically the better fit.

How to compare fees and settlement

There is no reliable universal price winner established by publicly comparable rates. Request written quotes based on the same payment mix, transaction volume, countries, channels, currencies, hardware, support scope, chargeback assumptions, and contract term. Compare total cost and obligations, not a headline processing rate alone.

Settlement also needs a contract-level comparison. Adyen says settlement is typically within one or two days and supports more than 30 settlement currencies, but the applicable currencies and timing depend on the merchant’s service and arrangement. Ask each provider to state payout timing, currency conversion treatment, reserves or holds if applicable, and any conditions in writing.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Coverage: Which of our legal entities, countries, payment methods, currencies, and channels are supported in the proposed setup?
  • Responsibilities: Who owns onboarding, verification, underwriting, risk decisions, disputes, customer support, merchant billing, and payouts?
  • Integration: Which API, platform model, POS system, ecommerce connector, or migration path is supported, and what work must our team do?
  • Commercial terms: What is the complete cost for our transaction mix, hardware, chargebacks, support, and contract duration?
  • Settlement: What is the schedule for each market and currency, and what factors can change it?
  • Hardware: Which terminal models and deployment arrangements are supported in our region? Global Payments describes terminal rental, sales, and deployment; confirm compatibility before buying any device.
  • Global Payments transition: Is the quoted service part of a post-Worldpay product or migration path, and which entity will contract and provide support?

Bottom line: choose by deployment, not brand size

Adyen is worth evaluating when a business wants its documented unified-platform and platform-payment capabilities; Global Payments merits comparison when a buyer needs its enterprise, platform, or SMB offerings and wants to assess the post-Worldpay portfolio. Neither provider can be named the better or cheaper option for every merchant. A fair decision requires scope-matched proposals covering geography, channels, responsibilities, implementation, settlement, support, and total cost.
