Investors saw the GST Council’s September 2025 rate rationalisation as a possible boost to affordability and demand for everyday goods, including oral-care products. That was the market’s explanation for the positive reaction—not proof that the tax change caused a particular share-price move or immediately improved Colgate-Palmolive (India)’s earnings. The exact claim that the shares rose “up to 8%” after snapping a two-day fall is not confirmed by the available dated price evidence.
Why investors reacted positively to the GST announcement
The GST Council met on 3–4 September 2025 and announced rate rationalisation. Contemporaneous market coverage connected the announcement to optimism that lower taxes on daily essentials could make products more affordable and support consumption. For Colgate-Palmolive (India), investors could interpret a lower tax rate on oral-care products as a potential benefit to consumers and demand.

That interpretation was an expectation, not an established earnings outcome. A tax reduction does not, by itself, show how much of the benefit reaches consumers, whether demand rises, or how the change affects a company’s revenue and margins. The sources available do not quantify the announcement’s causal effect on the share price.

The Economic Times reported that Colgate-Palmolive (India) shares gained 4.35% on 4 September 2025 during a broader advance in FMCG stocks. That is a contemporaneous reported gain for that date; it does not verify the headline’s “up to 8%” figure or establish that the stock’s move was caused solely by the GST announcement.

The 8% figure and the precise “two-day fall” sequence cannot be confirmed from the available evidence. A percentage move depends on the chosen interval and price basis: an intraday high, a closing price, and a close-to-close change can produce different results. Without a dated exchange price series matched to the claim, the 8% should not be treated as a verified closing gain.
When the GST change took effect for Colgate products
Colgate-Palmolive (India)’s investor materials described an updated product price list reflecting the new GST slabs, effective 22 September 2025. In later reporting on the September quarter, Business Standard said managing director and CEO Prabha Narasimhan stated that GST on the company’s entire oral-care portfolio had been reduced from 18% to 5%.

In its results release for the quarter ended 30 September 2025, announced on 23 October, the company described a “Tough quarter on a high growth base, impacted by GST led disruptions.” Business Standard reported that revenue was ₹1,507.2 crore, down 6.3% year over year, and net profit was ₹327.5 crore, down 17.1%. Those are historical figures for that quarter, not current results or evidence that the GST change alone caused the declines.

Business Standard’s later coverage attributed temporary disruption across distribution and retail channels to the GST transition. That subsequent account underscores the distinction between investors’ initial hopes for affordability and consumption and the operational effects reported during the changeover. It does not establish what share-price performance would have been without the announcement.

- Supported: The GST Council’s rate rationalisation was presented in contemporaneous coverage as a positive catalyst for FMCG shares, and The Economic Times reported a 4.35% Colgate-Palmolive (India) gain on 4 September 2025.
- Not established here: The exact “up to 8%” move and the precise two-day price sequence.
- Not proven: That the GST change alone caused the share move, or that lower GST immediately increased company earnings.
The most defensible reading is that investors initially responded to the possibility of improved affordability and consumption. The later quarter brought reported transition disruption, so the announcement-day optimism should not be mistaken for proof of a lasting business or stock-price benefit.
