Bandhan Mutual Fund’s “Battis Wali Smile” film uses a joke about the 31st and the number 32 to evoke the grin people may associate with a salary-credit message. It extends the fund house’s Salary Wala Plan campaign, which uses the familiarity of regular payments to introduce systematic withdrawal plans (SWPs). But the metaphor is not how an SWP works: each scheduled payment comes from redeeming mutual-fund units, and the value left invested can rise or fall.
What is “Battis Wali Smile” about?
In the film, a man insists that 32 comes after 31 in everyday situations. The punchline connects “32” to the broad smile after a payday notification—not to an extra day on the calendar. Press Network of India reported the launch on October 9, 2026, describing the film as an extension of Bandhan Mutual Fund’s Salary Wala Plan campaign. The report says advertising agency All In conceptualised the film. Press Network of India’s launch coverage

Bandhan AMC CEO Vishal Kapoor described the creative idea this way: “The insight behind ‘Battis Wali Smile’ is incredibly simple and human. Most people understand the happiness and reassurance that comes with receiving money regularly.” That is the company’s explanation of the campaign’s intent, not evidence that an SWP provides a salary or suits every investor.

An SWP is a facility through which an investor selects an amount and a withdrawal frequency. To make each payment, the mutual fund redeems units from the investor’s holding. The units not redeemed remain invested in the scheme. Bandhan’s explainer describes this process and cautions that returns are not assured or guaranteed. Bandhan Mutual Fund’s SWP explainer

How an SWP differs from a salary
| Question | Salary | SWP |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the payment come from? | Employment compensation, subject to the applicable employment terms. | Redemption of mutual-fund units. |
| What determines what remains? | A salary payment does not ordinarily redeem the employee’s investment units. | The remaining holding depends on the units redeemed and the fund’s changing value. |
| Is the payment a market return? | No; salary is compensation for work. | No; an SWP withdrawal is a redemption, not interest or a guaranteed return. |
The selected amount and schedule tell the fund how much to redeem and when; they do not guarantee that the investment can sustain those withdrawals. If withdrawals are high relative to investment performance and the length of time they continue, the balance can be depleted. The remaining units can also lose value if the underlying fund falls.
What affects an SWP’s remaining balance?
- Withdrawal amount and frequency: Larger or more frequent withdrawals mean more units may need to be redeemed, depending on the value of each unit when redemption occurs.
- Fund performance: The value of the units left invested can increase or decrease with the scheme’s investments.
- Duration: A longer withdrawal period gives more time for both withdrawals and market movements to affect the balance.
- Tax treatment: Tax consequences depend on the applicable rules and the investor’s circumstances; a scheduled payment should not be assumed to be tax-free income.
An SWP has no interest rate. It is a way to schedule redemptions, not a promise of positive returns, salary-like income, or preservation of principal. How to read the campaign’s salary metaphor
The campaign borrows the emotional association of regular money arriving to make a financial product easier to picture. The practical distinction is important: an employer pays wages under employment terms, while an SWP funds payments by selling investment units. The emotional shorthand should not be used to infer a guaranteed payout beyond the selected withdrawal schedule, guaranteed growth of the remaining holding, or personal suitability.

The film is an advertising concept; it does not establish what an individual should invest in or withdraw.
