How far did chip stocks fall?
Published market snapshots differed, so the figures should be read with their publisher and session rather than combined into a single global percentage. The Associated Press reported the South Korean Kospi down 7.4% to 5,914.35 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, its lowest level since late July. Reuters, in a report republished by Investing.com that day, gave a separate snapshot of the index down 7.2% to 5,923.37. Neither report provides a primary exchange data extract to reconcile the difference.

The Korean figures are not interchangeable with the prior U.S. trading session, and the reports do not establish one reconciled set of closing returns. The headline figures of Samsung down as much as 8.8%, SK Hynix 9.2% and Micron 4% are not all corroborated by these reports. Treat them as unverified here rather than as settled closing moves.

Doubts about AI spending and its payoff
Companies are investing heavily in the infrastructure needed to support AI, including advanced chips and server memory. That spending can support semiconductor demand, but investors are also asking whether the resulting products and services will generate durable returns. Reuters reported concern about returns on AI investment; a weak answer to that question could make lofty expectations for chipmakers harder to sustain, even while demand remains strong.

Financing could become a constraint
Bloomberg, in coverage republished by Mint, described financing as another worry: higher interest rates and debt-funded deals can make large infrastructure commitments more difficult or costly to carry. Tan warned that financing could become a key problem. This is a concern about the economics and funding of the buildout, not evidence that AI investment has stopped.
Reported progress by Chinese memory maker CXMT
Reports that CXMT is advancing memory technology added competitive pressure. Reuters described progress on a higher-density 4F² DRAM design and next-generation server-memory products targeted for year-end. The Associated Press likewise said reports of CXMT advances raised the prospect of a challenge to Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. These are reports about development and plans: the coverage does not establish commercial readiness, production scale, or a measurable effect on the Korean companies’ sales.

What Hock Tan said about AI investors
At an event in Singapore, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan criticized some investors’ understanding of AI-related bets. Bloomberg, republished by Mint, quoted him as saying: “A lot of investors have no clue what they are investing in,” and that they “set very extreme expectations only to find out that it’s almost like they are in a casino.”

Why the uncertainty matters for Samsung and SK Hynix
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are major suppliers in memory markets that serve data centers and other computing uses. That makes them exposed to both sides of the current debate: demand from AI infrastructure can support sales, while questions about spending returns, funding and new competitors can weigh on expectations for future earnings. Eugene Asset Management chief investment officer Ha SeokKeun told Mint: “Uncertainty over whether the upcycle can last into 2028 and beyond appears to be weighing on valuations and share prices” of Korean chipmakers.
A sharp daily decline does not by itself show that AI demand has collapsed or that CXMT has already displaced established suppliers. It shows that investors were reassessing risk and future expectations amid several overlapping concerns. The available reports describe market interpretation and development plans, not a confirmed change in chipmakers’ long-term competitive positions.

What to watch next
- AI investment returns: whether spending on infrastructure produces revenue and earnings sufficient to justify continued expansion.
- Funding conditions: whether higher borrowing costs or debt burdens constrain planned projects.
- CXMT’s progress: whether reported designs and year-end product targets translate into commercially ready products at meaningful scale.
