The Economic Times reported on October 13, 2026, that Abu Dhabi-based International Holding Company (IHC) was among parties in early-stage discussions about investing in Bandhan Financial Services Limited (BFSL), the promoter of Bandhan Bank. The report says BFSL was working with Jefferies to find strategic investors for a 25–32% stake. It does not confirm an investment or a deal. The report available here also does not establish the date or measurement behind the headline’s 8% share-price rise.

What the reported talks are about

The reported discussions concern BFSL, not a confirmed purchase of shares in the listed Bandhan Bank. BFSL owns a little more than a third of the bank, according to people cited by The Economic Times. If an investor bought into BFSL, that would mean taking a stake in the bank’s promoter; it would not, by itself, mean buying the same percentage of Bandhan Bank directly.

The Economic Times said BFSL was working with Jefferies to identify strategic investors for 25–32% of BFSL. The stated aim was to give early financial investors an opportunity to exit. The newspaper described IHC as one of the parties in early-stage discussions, citing people familiar with the matter. It did not report a completed agreement, agreed price or binding offer.

Who may be selling, and who else was canvassed?

The Economic Times reported that GIC and IFC together held 30.3% of BFSL at the end of March and were seeking a full or partial exit. People cited by the newspaper estimated that stake could be worth $500–600 million. That is a reported estimate of the investors’ holding, not a confirmed transaction valuation or agreed sale price.

Is the Bandhan Bank stake deal confirmed?

No. The Economic Times characterized the discussions as preliminary and said they might not lead to a transaction. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Bandhan’s founder and chairman, told the newspaper, “We don’t comment on market speculation.” A First Abu Dhabi Bank spokesperson told the paper, “As a matter of policy, we do not comment on individual client relationships, transactions, or market speculation.” Neither response confirms a deal.

The newspaper quoted an investor examining the deal as saying, “Discussions are picking up momentum, but the contours are evolving.” The investor also described the transaction as complicated and partly dependent on regulators. That is an unnamed investor’s characterization, not confirmation of agreed terms or regulatory approval.

What the report establishes about the 8% share move

The exact 8% rise in the headline is not independently established by the available reporting. The Economic Times reported that Bandhan Bank shares ended Monday at ₹157 and were up 13.32% year to date, but those figures do not specify that the shares rose 8% on a particular session or whether that figure refers to an intraday high or a closing-price change. The report date is October 13, 2026; the price figures are the newspaper’s point-in-time account, not a verified exchange record for the 8% move.

The newspaper also said the stock had fallen sharply after Bandhan cut its FY27 return-on-assets guidance following its June-quarter results in July. Its report links the recent operating outlook to market context, but the available information does not prove that the stake-talk report caused a specific one-day move. To confirm a price change, compare exchange prices for the exact trading date and use the same basis—previous close to current close, or intraday high—rather than treating those measures as interchangeable.

Why the promoter stake and RBI requirement matter

The Economic Times reported that Bandhan Financial Holdings held 37.5% of Bandhan Bank at the end of June. It said the bank’s licensing agreement with the Reserve Bank of India requires the holding to fall to 26% by 2030. This is a longer-term ownership constraint cited by the newspaper, not evidence that the reported BFSL discussions have been completed or that they alone will meet the requirement.

The two percentages refer to different levels of ownership: BFSL is the promoter whose investors may sell a stake, while Bandhan Financial Holdings is the entity the report identifies as holding 37.5% of the bank at June-end. The distinction matters when interpreting whether an investor is buying into the promoter or acquiring bank shares, and when assessing what any eventual transaction could change.

Operating context behind investor interest

The Economic Times reported that Bandhan lowered FY27 loan-growth guidance to the lower end of its previously stated 14–15% range. The report cited concerns involving costs, net interest margins, asset quality, supply chains, energy costs and the monsoon. Those factors provide context for the bank’s outlook, but they do not establish the terms, valuation or likelihood of a separate investment in BFSL.

The newspaper quoted JP Morgan analysts Anuj Singla and Harsh Wardhan Modi as saying Bandhan described the growth cut as pre-emptive and that on-the-ground asset-quality trends remained benign, including improving delinquency trends in newer and older vintages. They also said the credit-cost guidance was retained at 1.6–1.8%. This is the analysts’ account quoted by the newspaper, rather than a direct statement from the bank.

How to verify any subsequent development

Investors following the story should distinguish a report of discussions from a formal transaction announcement. Bandhan Bank’s investor-relations page lists exchange disclosures, shareholding patterns, annual reports, quarterly results and financial highlights. The NSE corporate-filings page for BANDHANBNK can also be checked for announcements. For a later update, rely on the dated filing or company announcement rather than an undated summary; an exchange filing can clarify what the listed bank has formally disclosed, though a promoter-level transaction may require separate disclosures.
