Why China Held Off on Soybean Purchases in October 2025: Brazil Premiums and Trade Tensions

In October 2025, high Brazilian premiums and U.S.–China trade tensions left China with an estimated 8–9 million metric tons of December–January soybean needs to cover. Later state-led U.S. purchases changed the trade picture, while Brazil remained a major supplier.

In October 2025, China had covered its soybean needs through November but still needed to buy an estimated 8–9 million metric tons for December–January shipments, according to traders cited by Reuters. High Brazilian premiums and U.S.–China trade tensions narrowed its options. That was a snapshot of a specific procurement gap—not evidence that China stopped buying U.S. soybeans or that the same market conditions persist today.

What China’s October 2025 buying pause meant

Reuters reported on October 16, 2025, that Chinese buyers had secured supplies through November, largely with Argentine purchases, but had not booked much of their December–January needs. Three trade sources estimated that about 8–9 million metric tons remained to be purchased. That estimate came from market sources, not an official Chinese procurement announcement. Reuters, October 16, 2025.

The reported hesitation reflected a combination of cost and uncertainty. Brazilian cargo premiums were high, while escalating trade tensions were keeping U.S. supplies out of consideration at that time. Traders said Chinese buyers were looking toward Brazil’s upcoming crop in hopes of more attractive prices. A possible release from Chinese state reserves was discussed as one option, but Reuters did not report that it had happened.

How Brazil and U.S. premiums compared

A soybean premium is the amount a buyer pays above a specified futures-contract price for a physical cargo. It is not the full delivered cost: freight, tariffs, shipment timing and other terms also matter. For the November Chicago soybean contract, Reuters reported Brazilian premiums of $2.80–$2.90 per bushel and U.S. premiums of about $1.70 per bushel in October 2025. These are dated market observations, not current price quotes. Reuters, October 16, 2025.

  • Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
  • Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
  • Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
  • Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.

The higher Brazilian premium made those cargoes less appealing on that price basis, but it did not by itself make U.S. beans the better choice. Buyers also had to weigh trade-policy risk, the cost of bringing cargoes to China, and the month they needed the beans. The Reuters report quoted an unnamed oilseed trader at an international trading company supplying China: “China is not buying U.S. beans because of the trade war and Brazilian beans are too expensive.”

Why negative crush margins can curb imports

Chinese crushers buy soybeans and process them into soybean meal and oil. Their crush margin reflects the value of those products against the cost of beans and processing. When the margin is negative, processing can be unprofitable at prevailing prices, weakening the incentive to book additional cargoes.

Reuters said crush margins had been negative for most of the second half of 2025, limiting crushers’ appetite for more purchases. That was one factor alongside premiums and trade tensions—not a claim that every processor faced identical costs or stopped buying.

Why Brazilian harvest timing mattered

China’s buyers were watching Brazil’s new crop as a possible source of lower-priced supply. Reuters reported that Brazil’s agricultural agency Conab forecast a 2025/26 soybean crop of 177.64 million metric tons, about 6 million tons above the previous year. A trader said shipments from the new crop could begin at the end of January. Both figures and the timing were reported in October 2025; later forecasts differed, so this should not be read as a current crop estimate. Reuters, October 16, 2025.

Waiting for new-crop shipments could give buyers access to a different supply window, but it left the December–January gap to be managed. The timing helps explain why China’s reported purchasing decision was about more than choosing the lowest premium: the origin also had to be available for the required shipment month.

What changed after the October 2025 report

The pause did not mean China permanently stopped buying U.S. soybeans. Reuters later reported that Chinese state-owned companies bought about 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans after relations thawed in late October 2025. Reuters said private traders were less interested because U.S. beans cost more and faced a higher tariff than Brazilian supplies. For December cargoes, Reuters reported tariff-excluded prices of $507.90 per metric ton for Brazil, $516.90 for the U.S. Gulf and $510.50 for the U.S. Pacific Northwest in January 2026. These were reported comparisons for that period, not present-day offers. Reuters, January 2026.

By September 16, 2026, S&P Global Energy reported that China had booked 8.98 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans for marketing year 2026/27, based on USDA data. Yet Brazil remained a major supplier: Chinese customs data showed it accounted for 72.1% of China’s soybean imports through July 2026. S&P reported a 13% total duty on U.S. soybeans compared with the 3% most-favored-nation duty on Brazilian beans. These are reported conditions and period-specific figures, not a guarantee of future purchases or policy. S&P Global Energy, September 16, 2026.

State purchases and private crushers followed different patterns

State-owned buying should not be confused with private commercial demand. In a Reuters report dated September 30, 2026, Chinese state-run companies had bought around 13.7 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans following a May 2026 deal, while private crushers had taken South American shipments. The report said private processors had covered most needs through the Lunar New Year with Brazilian, Argentine and state-reserve supplies. It also cited weak animal-feed demand and negative crush margins as reasons near-term buying looked weaker. Reuters, September 30, 2026.

Outsidepride Soybean Seeds - 5 lbs High-Protein & High Yield Heirloom Variety Soy Beans, Ideal for Oil Processing, Forage, Animal Food Plots, & Wildlife Feed for Poultry & Other Farm Animals
  • HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
  • RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
  • OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
  • HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

The same report said a Sinograin auction offered 514,000 metric tons of imported soybeans and sold 37.3% of the quantity. That auction result is a signal about demand at that event, not a measure of all Chinese inventories or future purchasing. Reuters also quoted AgRadar Consulting founder Johnny Xiang: “Unless margins recover, commercial buyers are unlikely to book more cargoes from overseas.” This was his assessment of the outlook reported at the time.

How to read the competing price and purchase figures

Origin comparisons only make sense when the shipment period, price basis, tariff treatment and buyer are clear. Premiums above a futures contract are not directly interchangeable with tariff-excluded prices per metric ton, and neither figure alone establishes the final delivered cost. The reported sequence is best understood as a change in market circumstances: an October 2025 gap amid high Brazilian premiums and trade tensions, followed by state-led U.S. purchases and continued Brazilian supply, while private crushers remained sensitive to tariffs and processing economics.

  • Price basis: Check whether a figure is a premium over futures, a tariff-excluded cargo price or a delivered price.
  • Shipment timing: Supply available for one month may not fill a different month’s needs; Brazil’s 2025/26 crop was expected to begin shipping at the end of January, according to the October 2025 report.
  • Tariffs: The 13% U.S. and 3% Brazilian duties reported by S&P Global Energy in September 2026 affected comparative economics at that time.
  • Processor economics: Weak meal and oil demand or negative crush margins can reduce private crushers’ willingness to import, even when beans are available.
  • Buyer identity: Purchases by state-owned companies do not necessarily show that private crushers find the same origin commercially attractive.
