Capital One invested $5 million in Snowflake in September 2017 through Capital One Growth Ventures, its venture-investing arm. The investment raised Snowflake’s Series D total to $105 million. Capital One was already a Snowflake customer: the company said it became Snowflake’s first Virtual Private Snowflake customer in July 2017, two months before the financing announcement. Snowflake framed the investment as support for technology serving financial-services enterprises.
What happened in the 2017 financing?
Snowflake Computing announced on September 6, 2017, that Capital One Growth Ventures had joined its Series D financing with a $5 million investment. Snowflake said the round totaled $105 million after the investment; TechCrunch described it as an addition to the $100 million Series D that had been announced earlier in 2017.

The investor and the customer were related but distinct: Capital One Growth Ventures made the investment, while Capital One was the enterprise customer. Snowflake’s announcement said Capital One became its first Virtual Private Snowflake (VPS) customer in July 2017. Snowflake’s September 2017 announcement is the primary account of the transaction and customer relationship; TechCrunch’s contemporaneous coverage places it alongside Snowflake’s earlier Series D.

The announcement presented the investment as strategically aligned with Snowflake’s effort to serve financial-services enterprises. Snowflake was positioning its cloud data warehousing technology for regulated industries, including financial services and healthcare. A customer relationship already existed, so the investment accompanied a commercial connection rather than preceding it.

The public statements establish the parties’ stated rationale and the product’s intended market context; they do not independently demonstrate that the platform met particular security or compliance requirements, nor that Capital One as a whole endorsed it. The investment should not be read as proof that the software was risk-free.

Later company statements describe Capital One continuing to use Snowflake, but they do not establish that the 2017 investment caused the subsequent operational outcomes.

In a 2022 announcement, Biba Helou, Capital One’s Senior Vice President of Enterprise Data Platforms, said Snowflake let the bank scale workloads and that it wanted to manage costs as access to data increased, with governance. Snowflake’s Senior Vice President of Product, Christian Kleinerman, also described Capital One’s use of the platform over the preceding five years. These are company statements, not independent evaluations. Capital One’s 2022 announcement provides the comments and their context.

Snowflake’s fiscal 2026 filing later described Capital One as using its platform to unify proprietary data and scale AI-driven analytics. That filing documents how Snowflake characterized the customer’s use; it does not prove a causal link between the original investment and those activities. Snowflake’s fiscal 2026 filing is the source for that later description.
