Canoo CFO Greg Ethridge and General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Hector Ruiz notified the company of their resignations on October 31, 2024. Canoo disclosed the departures in a Form 8-K filed November 5. The filing and contemporaneous reporting establish who left and who took over, but do not give a reason for either resignation.
What happened to Canoo’s CFO and general counsel?
Canoo’s November 5, 2024 Form 8-K reported the officer changes under Item 5.02, which covers departures and appointments of certain officers. The SEC filing index confirms the filing date and item; the SEC index for Canoo’s filing does not itself explain why the executives resigned.
TechCrunch reported that Ethridge and Ruiz notified Canoo of their resignations on October 31. It identified Kunal Bhalla, previously CEO Tony Aquila’s chief of staff, as Ethridge’s successor as CFO, and associate general counsel Sean Yan as Ruiz’s successor. TechCrunch also reported Bhalla’s base salary would be $300,000.
Why did they leave?
No reason for either resignation is established by the available filing index or TechCrunch’s November 5, 2024 report. The report said Ethridge and Ruiz did not respond to requests for comment. It would be speculation to attribute their departures to Canoo’s finances, management, or operational changes.

Furloughs and operational realignment
On November 5, Canoo announced that it had furloughed 30 Oklahoma workers for 12 weeks, describing the move as “as part of a broader realignment of its North American operations.” TechCrunch reported that Canoo had recently closed its original Los Angeles headquarters and was prioritizing operations in Texas and Oklahoma.
Cash constraints and borrowing
TechCrunch reported that Canoo had about $19 million in total cash as of June 30, 2024, including $4.5 million that was unrestricted. It also reported that Canoo borrowed from a fund connected to Aquila in October at an 11% interest rate, and that the November 5 filing disclosed an additional $2.7 million borrowing from that fund and a revolving credit facility. These are dated figures and transactions reported in 2024, not a statement of the company’s present finances.
