Rivian reportedly built a reserve of batteries from Asia ahead of tariff changes, but the available reporting does not establish that the cells were exempt from every tariff—or disclose how many the company acquired. The story is best understood as a reported inventory hedge, not proof of a blanket tariff exemption.
What Rivian reportedly stockpiled
Bloomberg reported on April 30, 2025, citing people familiar with the matter, that Rivian directly acquired lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells from China’s Gotion High-Tech late in 2024, before the U.S. election. Bloomberg also reported that Rivian worked with South Korea’s Samsung SDI to move a large amount of battery inventory from South Korea to the United States. Bloomberg’s report was also carried by Transport Topics.

The two reported movements should not be treated as comparable quantities: the reports do not give amounts for either one.
Are the batteries really tariff-free?
Not necessarily. The reporting describes purchases and inventory movements timed to create a buffer against later tariff exposure. It does not establish that every shipment was legally exempt from every tariff, that the cells incurred no duties, or that stockpiling removed Rivian’s broader exposure to tariffs.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said on the company’s Q1 2025 earnings call that inventory provided resilience against tariff increases through the end of that year. He did not quantify the reserve or publicly confirm each supplier movement in Bloomberg’s account. The Q1 2025 call transcript also records Scaringe saying that the company was actively addressing R1 cell sourcing for 2026 and beyond, with flexibility to consider alternatives.
How much did Rivian stockpile?
The sources reviewed do not state a unit count, energy capacity, dollar value, or precise location for the reported reserve. They also do not establish how much, if any, remained as of October 4, 2026. Rivian’s statement about inventory resilience through the end of 2025 described the company’s position at that time; it is not a current balance.

What Rivian said about its broader tariff costs
On Rivian’s Q3 2025 earnings call, CFO Claire McDonough said the tariff impact was “just under $2,000 per vehicle” for products sold in that quarter. She said the company expected “a few hundred dollars per unit for new builds” once the policies discussed on the call were fully in place. These were company figures about overall vehicle tariff exposure, not estimates of savings from the battery reserve. The Q3 2025 call transcript also records Scaringe’s forecast that an LG-supplied 4695 cylindrical cell planned for R2 would be produced in Arizona starting in the late-2026 timeframe. That was a forecast made in 2025, not confirmation that production began on schedule.

Rivian’s 2024 annual filing discussed risks associated with holding higher levels of battery-cell inventory, including obsolescence, degradation, and damage. It also addressed thermal-event risks and regulated storage and transport. The filing gives general context about carrying and handling battery inventory; it does not identify that inventory as the tariff reserve described in April 2025.
