Why BT Group Shares Rose After Bharti Agreed to Buy Altice’s Stake

Bharti’s 2024 agreement to acquire Altice UK’s approximately 24.5% BT holding was read as confidence in BT and a change of major shareholder. The deal completed in November 2024; the reported share reaction does not establish an exact price move or prove causation.

BT Group shares reportedly rose after Bharti Global agreed on 12 August 2024 to acquire Altice UK’s approximately 24.5% holding in the telecoms company. Contemporary coverage interpreted the deal as a sign of confidence in BT’s strategy and a change in the identity of a major shareholder, but the available reporting does not establish that the transaction alone caused the share-price movement or specify its exact size. The acquisition completed on 18 November 2024, so this is a historical account, not a newly announced deal.

What Bharti agreed to buy

Bharti Global, the international investment arm of Bharti Enterprises, announced a binding agreement on 12 August 2024 for its wholly owned Bharti Televentures UK Ltd to acquire approximately 24.5% of BT Group’s issued share capital from Altice UK. Bharti described the transaction in two stages:

  • Approximately 9.99% was to be acquired initially.
  • The remaining approximately 14.51% was to follow after regulatory clearances.

Bharti said it was voluntarily applying for clearance under the UK National Security and Investment Act. It also said it had no intention of making an offer to acquire BT. The transaction was therefore a large minority investment, not an announced takeover. Bharti Enterprises’ announcement set out those terms.

Computer Weekly reported at the time that the entire deal was valued at about £3.2 billion. That was the publication’s contemporary valuation; it was not a figure stated in Bharti’s announcement. Computer Weekly’s 13 August 2024 report described the share-price reaction as a spike, but did not provide an exact price or percentage move in the material cited here.

Why the shares reportedly rose

Contemporary coverage offered two related interpretations: Bharti’s investment could be read as confidence in BT’s strategy, and the deal would replace Altice as the owner of a substantial block of shares. Those interpretations help explain the market narrative around the announcement, but they do not prove why investors traded or establish the transaction’s precise effect on BT’s price.

BT chief executive Alison Kirkby welcomed Bharti’s investment, calling it “a great vote of confidence in the future of BT Group and our strategy.” She also said Bharti shared the company’s ambition and vision. These were statements of BT’s perspective on the investor, not evidence that the investment would guarantee future performance or a particular strategic result. The quotations appeared in the contemporary Computer Weekly report.

BT’s bulletin also says the UK Government’s final order approved the acquisition subject to BT establishing a National Security Committee. The condition is part of the recorded approval; it does not change the fact that BT reported the stake acquisition as completed.

What the share reaction does—and does not—tell investors

A reported rise after an announcement is a short-term market reaction, not a forecast. It cannot by itself show that BT’s business performance improved, that Bharti would pursue a particular course as a shareholder, or that the share price would continue rising. The contemporary reporting cited here supplies neither an exact price move nor proof of a single cause.

For a personal investor reviewing the event, keep the evidence in separate categories: Bharti’s stated transaction terms; BT’s later record of completion and the national-security condition; and contemporaneous explanations of how investors may have interpreted the news. The first two establish what the companies announced and did. The third is market commentary, not a demonstrated causal finding.
