Brian Wilson’s former wife, Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford, sued him in 2022 seeking an accounting and at least $6,704,879 from his reported sale of music rights to Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG). Her complaint said a 1981 divorce judgment gave her an equal interest in rights tied to 170 compositions from their marriage. Wilson’s attorneys disputed that she was entitled to proceeds from the sale of copyright termination interests. The complaint records her allegations and request for relief; it does not establish that she was owed the amount sought.
What was the $50 million UMPG deal?
Contemporaneous reports described a late-2021 transaction in which Wilson sold UMPG songwriter-share and reversion interests for more than, or approximately, $50 million. Rolling Stone reported that UMPG had not publicly announced the deal. The reported components differ slightly by outlet:
| Reported component | Rolling Stone’s account | Digital Music News’s account |
|---|---|---|
| Songwriter or writer share | Nearly $32 million, as Rolling Stone summarized the lawsuit | $31 million, reported from court documents |
| Reversion or termination interests | $19 million, as Rolling Stone summarized the lawsuit | $19.2 million, reported from court documents |
| Overall transaction | Approximately $50 million | More than $50 million |
The amounts are contemporaneous media reports, not a single publicly announced UMPG transaction breakdown. See Rolling Stone’s March 31, 2022 account and Digital Music News’s March 30, 2022 report.
Why did Brian Wilson’s ex-wife sue him?
Wilson-Rutherford’s complaint said the couple’s March 4, 1981 dissolution judgment gave her an equal interest in specified copyrights, contract rights, and royalty rights associated with 170 compositions created during their marriage. It also described accounting obligations related to those interests. Those are characterizations in the complaint and attached papers, not findings by a judge.

She sought an accounting and at least $6,704,879 in additional proceeds tied to the reversion-rights sale. The complaint said Wilson had already sent her $11,022,937 for her claimed half of the community songwriter-share proceeds, but had not supplied the supporting information she said was needed to verify the calculation. It further said he offered her $3,352,439.82 in connection with the reversion interests.
The disputed $6.7 million request was separate from the reported $11 million payment for songwriter-share proceeds. The complaint asked the court to determine the accounting and amount due; the requested sum was not an award. The March 25, 2022 complaint and attached papers document the plaintiff’s allegations and requested relief.

Why did the parties disagree about termination rights?
The key distinction was between proceeds from a songwriter share and proceeds from reversion or termination interests. Copyright termination provisions can, in some circumstances, allow an author or eligible party to end an earlier copyright grant. Rolling Stone described this generally as artists being able to reclaim rights roughly 35 years after signing them away. That simplified explanation does not decide who owned the specific interests sold to UMPG or whether Wilson-Rutherford was entitled to a share.
Wilson-Rutherford’s position
Her complaint relied on the 1981 judgment’s asserted equal division of specified rights in marital compositions and related accounting obligations. She argued for an accounting and a share of the sale proceeds associated with those rights.

Wilson’s attorneys’ position
Wilson’s attorneys argued that the termination interests arose after the marriage through Wilson’s postmarital efforts, and were not property Wilson-Rutherford received under the divorce judgment. Rolling Stone quoted their statement: “This is a business dispute between Brian and his ex-wife over who owns ‘copyright termination interests’ in songs Brian wrote or helped write during their marriage.” Digital Music News also quoted the attorneys’ position that Wilson’s ownership of the interests he sold depended on his “postmarital efforts” to obtain them.
These competing positions concern the scope and ownership of particular interests. The general possibility of copyright termination does not by itself establish how the divorce judgment applies to those interests.

What is known about the lawsuit’s timeline?
- 1964–1978: Contemporaneous reporting says Brian and Marilyn Wilson were married during these years.
- March 4, 1981: The date the complaint identifies for entry of their dissolution judgment.
- Late 2021: Wilson reportedly completed the transaction with UMPG.
- February 2022: Wilson-Rutherford filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to Rolling Stone; the case was later moved to federal court.
- March 25, 2022: Date on the complaint and supporting papers.
- March 30–31, 2022: Digital Music News and Rolling Stone published reports about the dispute.
Was the case resolved?
The sources cited here establish that Wilson-Rutherford filed the claim and that Wilson’s attorneys disputed her entitlement to reversion-sale proceeds. They do not establish a final judgment, settlement, or dismissal. Accordingly, the requested $6,704,879 should be described as relief she sought—not money a court awarded or an amount the available accounts show she ultimately received.
