People are buying fewer tablets, but the category has not disappeared. Phones and laptops now cover many tasks a tablet once filled, and a device that remains usable for years does not need replacing often. Post-pandemic demand has also cooled, while household budget pressure can push a discretionary upgrade down the list. Tablets remain worthwhile when they solve a recurring need—such as reading, drawing, schoolwork or portable video—better than devices you already own.
What the latest tablet numbers do—and don’t—show
IDC reported worldwide tablet shipments of 33.6 million units in Q2 2026, down 12.3% year over year. The decline was steeper in consumer shipments, at 13.5%, than in commercial shipments, at 5.9%. These figures measure devices shipped into the market, not the number of people who stopped buying tablets.
The category has not moved in a straight line. IDC reported 36.8 million shipments in Q4 2023, down 17.4% year over year, amid economic conditions, spending freezes and postponed projects. Canalys then reported 18% year-over-year growth in Q2 2024; Apple shipped 13.9 million iPads that quarter, representing a 39% global share. The later decline shows that a rebound in one quarter does not establish a lasting recovery.
In Q2 2026, IDC reported slate-tablet shipments down 19.8% year over year, compared with a 6.1% decline for detachable tablets. That gap suggests demand is holding up better for devices that can take on more laptop-like work. It does not mean every detachable is a good value, or that slates have no useful role.

Why a tablet is easier to skip now
Phones and laptops cover the middle ground
A phone is already on hand for communication, social apps, photos and quick browsing. A laptop is usually more capable for sustained typing and desktop multitasking. A tablet’s advantage sits between them: more screen than a phone, often in a lighter and more convenient package than a laptop. If that middle ground does not match a regular task, the extra device can feel redundant.
Tablets can stay useful for years
A working tablet may keep serving its owner long after the novelty wears off. TIME made this point in a 2014 analysis, comparing tablet refresh timing to television replacement rather than the faster smartphone cycle. That is historical context, not a current measured average lifespan. The practical point for a household budget is that a tablet that still performs its intended job may not need replacing just because a newer model exists.

Post-pandemic urgency faded, and budgets matter
Canalys analyst Himani Mukka wrote in 2022 that the reduced need for tablets in the post-pandemic world had been exacerbated by pressure on consumer spending. IDC’s account of Q4 2023 likewise connected weaker demand with economic conditions, spending freezes and postponed purchases. In Q2 2026, the larger year-over-year shipment decline for consumers than for commercial buyers is consistent with households being more cautious, though shipment data alone cannot identify the reason for each purchase decision.
Some tablets do not offer enough software difference
TIME’s 2014 analysis also noted that many apps were phone-first or scaled-up versions, which could weaken the case for a separate tablet. That observation is historical; it should not be taken as a verdict on every current app or device. For a buyer, the useful test is specific: check whether the apps and workflows you actually use take advantage of the larger screen, stylus or multitasking features.

How to decide whether a tablet earns its place
Compare the tablet with the devices you already own, not with an imaginary empty desk. A tablet is a good purchase when it makes a frequent task easier enough to justify its full cost. Consider the trade-offs before buying:

| Total cost | Include any keyboard, stylus, protective case, connectivity plan or other accessory needed for your intended use. Compare that total with using or upgrading a device you already own. |
| Screen and weight | Will the larger, lighter screen than your phone make reading, video or carrying the device noticeably more convenient? |
| Typing and multitasking | If work depends on sustained typing or desktop-style multitasking, check whether the tablet and its keyboard support that workflow comfortably. A laptop may be the more suitable purchase. |
| Apps and operating system | Confirm that the apps you rely on are available and work well on the tablet’s operating system and screen size. |
| Update longevity | Check the maker’s stated software-support policy for the specific model. Do not assume every tablet receives the same length of support. |
| Battery life | Look for battery information relevant to your expected use; a manufacturer’s estimate may not match your mix of video, reading, gaming and work. |
| Devices already in the household | If your phone and laptop already handle the task comfortably, the tablet may duplicate them. If they do not, identify the recurring gap the tablet would fill. |
Who is most likely to benefit
- Frequent readers and video viewers: A tablet can be more comfortable than a phone for long sessions while remaining easier to carry than many laptops.
- Students, children and families: A shared screen can suit schoolwork, reading or family use when the device, apps and supervision arrangements fit the household.
- Artists and note-takers: A tablet is more compelling when you will regularly use a compatible stylus for drawing, handwriting or annotation.
- Workers with a clear mobile workflow: A detachable keyboard, pen input or field mobility can justify a tablet when those capabilities are genuinely useful for the job.
- Owners replacing an old tablet: Replacement makes sense when the existing device no longer meets a frequent need—not simply because a new generation is available.
When skipping the purchase is the financially sensible choice
Wait if you cannot name a recurring task the tablet would improve, if your phone or laptop already handles that task well, or if the accessories needed to make the tablet useful push its total cost beyond your budget. A device bought for a possible future use can become an expensive duplicate. If you already own a tablet that still works for its main purpose, continuing to use it can be the better value.

The market evidence points to a narrower role, not a universal end to tablets: consumers have pulled back more sharply than commercial buyers, and detachables have declined less than slate models. For an individual household, the decision is simpler than the shipment trend: buy only when the tablet solves a regular problem better than the devices you already have.
