The pause was temporary: a 10% tariff remained for most countries, while China was excluded from the relief and faced a higher U.S. tariff rate. The move was part of a broad market rebound, not evidence that tariff relief alone accounted for Apple’s gain.
What happened on April 9, 2025?
Trump announced a 90-day pause on most new reciprocal tariffs and set the rate at 10% for most countries. CBS News reported that the announcement also raised the U.S. tariff rate on Chinese imports to 125. The Associated Press described China as a major exception to the pause. These were developments announced at the time, not a statement of current tariff policy.
Trump wrote, “I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE,” according to the Associated Press. CBS also reported Trump’s claim that “more than 75 Countries” had contacted U.S. representatives to negotiate; that count was attributed to Trump, not independently verified in the report.
The administration’s April 2 fact sheet had described its initial reciprocal-tariff framework and said the president could modify tariffs under specified conditions. That was the administration’s description of its policy and rationale, rather than independent evidence of the tariffs’ economic effects. White House fact sheet, April 2, 2025.

How did Apple and the broader market move?
Apple rose more than 15% during the April 9 session. The gains extended across major U.S. indexes: the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 7.9%, the S&P 500 rose 9.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 12.2%, according to CBS News’ report on the session. The Associated Press also reported a broad rally.
The index moves matter for interpreting Apple’s return: investors were responding to a major policy announcement amid a widespread rebound, not just trading Apple. The cited coverage establishes that Apple’s surge coincided with the announcement and rally; it does not break down how much of Apple’s gain was caused by tariff relief or other factors.

What did the pause mean for Apple?
It eased some immediate tariff pressure for most countries, but it did not eliminate tariffs, apply equally to China, or settle the trade dispute. The 10% rate remained for most countries, while China faced a higher rate. That distinction matters to Apple because the announcement was not a uniform return to the pre-announcement tariff environment.
The pause also came with a limited duration. On July 7, 2025, the White House said certain tariff rates initially set to expire July 9 would instead expire August 1. That later change underscores that the April announcement was temporary and policy timing remained subject to further updates. White House update, July 7, 2025.

Why the stock jump did not resolve uncertainty
A sharp one-day rally reflects how markets repriced risk at that moment; it does not establish that the trade conflict was over or settle its longer-term economic effects. The Associated Press warned that the dispute could bring further market swings. CBS quoted Comerica Bank Chief Economist Bill Adams: “Even so, the huge overhang of policy uncertainty will weigh on investment and weak decisions in the next few months.”
This is a historical account of the April 9, 2025 market session, not a current Apple stock quote or an assessment of today’s tariff rates. The available reporting documents the timing and market context, but not a company-specific causal estimate for Apple’s rise.
