Apple Wasn’t the First $4 Trillion Company: What Happened

No. Apple was not the first publicly traded company to reach a $4 trillion market value: Nvidia crossed that threshold first, in July 2025. Apple reached $4 trillion in October 2025, then briefly topped $5 trillion intraday on July 28, 2026, according to Reuters. Those are dated market milestones—not a current stock price or a guarantee that either valuation would hold.

Who reached $4 trillion first?

Nvidia became the first publicly traded company to surpass $4 trillion in market capitalization in July 2025, The Associated Press reported. Its shares later fell enough that Nvidia closed below the threshold that day. Apple crossed $4 trillion in October 2025, making it the second company to reach that milestone.

The distinction matters: a company can pass a round-number valuation during trading and finish the session below it. A headline saying a company “hit” a milestone does not necessarily mean it closed above that level.

What does a $4 trillion market capitalization mean?

Market capitalization is the market value of a company’s outstanding shares, calculated using the share price and number of shares. It is not the company’s cash balance, annual sales, profit, or the amount investors have collectively paid for every share over time. Because share prices move during trading, market capitalization moves too.

That is why the wording and timing matter. Nvidia’s July 2025 milestone was an intraday crossing followed by a close below $4 trillion. Reuters’s July 28, 2026 report likewise showed Apple moving from a $5.036 trillion session high to $4.98 trillion later that session. Neither observation alone establishes a lasting valuation level.

Why did Apple’s valuation rise?

Apple’s October 2025 crossing followed a rise in its shares. The Associated Press connected investor interest to iPhone demand while also describing concerns about Apple’s execution on artificial intelligence features.

iPhone demand and expectations

For July through September 2025, Apple’s iPhone sales totaled $49 billion, up 6% year over year, according to AP. That growth was below the 8% increase analysts had expected and below the 13% increase reported for April through June. The figures provide context for the share-price story, but a sales increase is not the same thing as proof that a stock’s valuation is justified.

AI delivery remained a question

AP’s October 2025 coverage also noted delayed Apple AI features and the company’s expectation that a more capable Siri would come later. That made execution a relevant uncertainty alongside demand: investors were weighing both Apple’s established iPhone business and its ability to deliver on newer technology promises.

How did Apple’s later results compare with the valuation headlines?

Apple reported $143.8 billion in revenue for fiscal Q1 2026, the quarter ended December 27, 2025, up 16% from a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share were $2.84, up 19%, and the company reported record iPhone and Services revenue. These are operating results, distinct from market capitalization.

CEO Tim Cook said in Apple’s January 29, 2026 results release that the quarter’s revenue was “well above our expectations.” He also said iPhone had its best-ever quarter, driven by demand, and that Services revenue rose 14% year over year. Those are company statements about its results and interpretation; one quarter does not establish future growth or, by itself, explain a market valuation.

What happened after Apple crossed $4 trillion?

Reuters reported that Apple briefly exceeded $5 trillion intraday on July 28, 2026, reaching a session-high market value of $5.036 trillion before later standing at $4.98 trillion. Reuters also said Apple had overtaken Nvidia as the world’s most valuable company earlier that month, while Nvidia had held the top position since June 2025. These rankings and values are time-sensitive, not permanent company attributes.

In that Reuters report, Forrester vice president and principal analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee said Apple had “resisted the AI spending race,” arguing that customer experience rather than infrastructure investment would determine winners. That is Chatterjee’s analysis, not a settled explanation of Apple’s valuation or a guarantee about future performance.

The dated milestone reports establish that Apple later reached $5 trillion intraday; they do not establish Apple’s current market capitalization on October 7, 2026. Market values change with share prices, so a current figure requires a current market-data source.
