Amazon shares fell more than 10% in after-hours trading on February 5, 2026, after its fourth-quarter diluted earnings per share narrowly missed analyst expectations and CEO Andy Jassy projected about $200 billion in 2026 capital spending. The quarter was not uniformly weak: revenue rose 14% to $213.4 billion, and AWS sales grew 24% to $35.6 billion. The tension was between strong reported growth and the scale, timing and uncertain returns of the investment plan. The $200 billion figure was Amazon’s initial 2026 forecast; by July 30, the company’s expected spending had risen to $220 billion.
Why did Amazon stock fall after Q4 earnings?
The immediate backdrop was a narrow earnings-per-share miss alongside a sharply higher spending outlook. GeekWire reported that Q4 2025 revenue exceeded analyst estimates, but diluted EPS of $1.95 came in just below expectations; it also reported that shares fell more than 10% in after-hours trading following the February 5 announcement. The stock move is historical, not a current quote, and the available reporting does not establish how much of the decline was attributable to each factor. GeekWire’s earnings coverage describes the reaction.
Amazon still reported higher year-over-year net income: $21.2 billion, compared with $20.0 billion in Q4 2024. Net sales were $213.4 billion, up 14%. The results therefore combined growth and increased profit with an EPS miss and investor concern about the investment required to pursue future growth. Amazon’s Q4 results release contains the company’s reported figures.
Operating profit included sizable charges
Amazon reported Q4 operating income of $25.0 billion and identified $2.44 billion in special charges: $1.1 billion related to Italian tax disputes and a lawsuit, $730 million in estimated severance costs, and $610 million in asset impairments, primarily related to physical stores. Amazon said operating income would have been $27.4 billion without those charges. That adjusted figure is the company’s stated counterfactual, not a replacement for its reported result.

What was Amazon’s $200 billion spending plan?
On February 5, Jassy said Amazon expected to invest about $200 billion in capital expenditures across the company in 2026, citing demand for existing offerings and opportunities in AI, chips, robotics and low-earth-orbit satellites. This was a forecast for spending on long-lived assets and infrastructure—not a reported expense already incurred or a guaranteed return. Amazon’s announcement records the initial forecast and management’s stated rationale.
The figure changed later in the year. On July 30, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Amazon had raised its expected 2026 capital spending to $220 billion, compared with $128 billion spent in 2025. AP identified higher memory-chip costs as the main reason for the revision. Thus, $200 billion accurately describes the February headline, but $220 billion was the later outlook reported after Q2. The Associated Press report covers the revision.

How strong was AWS, and why does it matter?
AWS sales reached $35.6 billion in Q4 2025, up 24% from a year earlier; AWS operating income was $12.5 billion. Those results showed substantial cloud growth, but they do not by themselves settle whether Amazon’s planned infrastructure spending will generate adequate returns. In a later quarter, AP reported AWS sales growth of 37% in Q2 2026. The Q4 and Q2 growth rates refer to different periods and should not be read as a single-quarter trend. Amazon’s Q4 release and AP’s Q2 report provide the respective figures.
What does the spending mean for cash flow?
At December 31, 2025, Amazon’s trailing-twelve-month free cash flow was $11.2 billion, down from $38.2 billion a year earlier. The company said the decline primarily reflected a $50.7 billion increase in purchases of property and equipment, net of proceeds and incentives. Operating cash flow over the trailing twelve months was $139.5 billion. These measures are not interchangeable: operating cash flow captures cash generated by operations, while free cash flow reflects the effect of investment spending under Amazon’s reported calculation. Amazon’s Q4 release explains the reported cash-flow figures.

Jassy’s explanation is that infrastructure must be funded before AWS can bill customers. In his 2025 shareholder letter, he said the lag is typically 6–24 months, depending on the component, and that much of the expected 2026 AWS capital spending would be monetized in 2027–2028. That is management’s account of the investment cycle and its expectation for future monetization, not independent confirmation that the returns will arrive on that schedule. Jassy’s 2025 shareholder letter sets out the explanation.
What changed after the February earnings reaction?
Amazon’s later guidance and spending update offer context, not a correction of what investors knew on February 5. Following Q2, the company’s July 30 release forecast Q3 net sales of $197 billion–$202 billion and operating income of $22.5 billion–$26.5 billion. Amazon cautioned that its forward-looking statements reflected expectations as of that date and were subject to substantial uncertainty. It cited potential effects from foreign exchange, energy prices, geopolitical conditions, tariffs, memory-chip supply, demand, inflation, interest rates and other factors. The guidance remains a forecast, not a reported outcome. Amazon’s Q2 2026 results release provides the ranges and qualifications.

How to read the investment trade-off
The available facts support two competing considerations rather than a settled verdict. Amazon points to demand, AWS growth and the need to build capacity before customers can be billed. Investors can weigh those prospects against falling free cash flow, a larger-than-initially-expected capital budget, and uncertainty about the timing and returns on new infrastructure. The earnings-day share decline signals the market’s reaction at that moment; it does not establish the long-term value of the spending plan or the current attractiveness of AMZN at any price.
