Amazon’s $2.75 billion investment was an additional tranche announced in March 2024—not the full value of its Anthropic commitment or its current cumulative investment. Amazon said the tranche brought its total investment to $4 billion at the time. The deal also deepened a commercial partnership built around AWS cloud infrastructure, Amazon Bedrock access to Anthropic models, and Amazon’s custom AI chips.
What Amazon’s $2.75 billion investment meant
In March 2024, Amazon announced an additional $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic. Amazon said the investment brought its total investment in the AI company to $4 billion at that point. The earlier September 2023 announcement had been for up to $4 billion; the two figures describe different stages of the commitment, not separate totals to add together. Amazon’s March 2024 announcement detailed the additional investment and expanded collaboration.
The initial announcement described Amazon’s position as a minority ownership stake, not control of Anthropic. The public announcements explain the investment and broad partnership, but do not disclose the full private investment agreement, a precise valuation, or detailed governance rights. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s decision record summarizes the initial investment as $1.25 billion, followed by the $2.75 billion tranche.
Why Amazon invested in Anthropic
The investment was paired with a strategic cloud and AI infrastructure relationship. Anthropic named AWS its primary cloud provider for specified mission-critical workloads, while AWS customers could access Anthropic models through Amazon Bedrock. Amazon also described access to its custom AI chips as part of the collaboration. Together, these terms linked Amazon’s financial investment to demand for AWS infrastructure and a route for businesses to use Anthropic models through an AWS service.

That rationale is supported by the announced commercial terms; the public statements do not establish the private parties’ full financial expectations or contract details. The partnership should not be confused with Amazon owning or controlling Anthropic.
How the investment changed after 2024
The $4 billion total was accurate after the March 2024 tranche, but it is not the latest announced cumulative figure. In 2026, Amazon announced another $5 billion investment and said it could invest up to $20 billion more. That additional amount is a possibility, not an investment already completed. Amazon also said Anthropic committed to spending more than $100 billion on AWS technology over ten years. Amazon’s 2026 announcement describes those later terms.
