Airlines are sensitive to aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices because fuel is one of their largest operating costs. When fuel becomes more expensive, the cost of flying a given schedule rises; unless fares or other revenue increase enough to cover it, profit margins tighten. IndiGo’s FY2025 accounts show the scale of its fuel bill, while its April 2026 announcement illustrates why passing the full increase on to passengers can be difficult.
Why a fuel-price increase can squeeze airline profits
Fuel is a substantial cost, but its share of airline spending changes as prices and other expenses move. In its June 2026 outlook, IATA forecast that fuel would account for 31.4% of worldwide airline operating expenses in 2026, up from 25.4% in 2025. IATA attributed the higher share to fuel prices, while forecasting the same fuel consumption in both years. These are global forecasts, not audited results or an IndiGo-specific cost ratio.

IATA also forecast an average jet-fuel price of $152 per barrel in 2026, nearly 70% above its reported 2025 average of $90, and worldwide airline fuel costs of $350 billion in 2026 versus $252 billion in 2025. These figures are estimates in IATA’s June 2026 outlook, not final outcomes. IATA’s June 2026 industry outlook

The size of the bill depends on both the price paid per unit and how much fuel an airline uses to operate its schedule. More flights or greater capacity can raise total fuel expense even if prices are falling; a lower price can partly offset increased flying. IATA’s outlook illustrates the price effect at a global level, while IndiGo’s annual report shows how the two influences can appear together in one company’s results.

What IndiGo’s annual fuel bill shows—and what it does not
InterGlobe Aviation, IndiGo’s parent, reported aircraft fuel expense of ₹261,973 million for FY2025, compared with ₹239,046 million for FY2024. Its annual report said the 9.6% increase came against capacity growth of 13.1%, with lower ATF prices offsetting some of the increase. The comparison demonstrates that both scale of operations and fuel prices matter to the total bill; it does not isolate the effect of a particular change in fuel price. IndiGo Annual Report 2024–25
For broader context, CRISIL Ratings’ December 8, 2025 rationale estimated that ATF represented 35–40% of total operating costs for aviation-industry players. That is an industry range, not an audited IndiGo percentage. CRISIL also described ATF as volatile and directly linked to global crude prices. CRISIL Ratings’ InterGlobe Aviation rationale

Crude oil and jet fuel prices do not move as one fixed cost
Crude oil is only part of the price picture. Jet fuel typically trades at a premium to crude, known as the crack spread. If that premium widens, jet fuel can become more expensive even when crude-price changes alone do not explain the increase.

It also noted that some airlines hedge crude because that market is more liquid, leaving them exposed to increases in the jet-fuel crack spread. This is a global description, not evidence of IndiGo’s hedge position, and a crude hedge does not necessarily fix the airline’s delivered jet-fuel cost. IATA’s fuel guidance describes fuel as “typically being one of the largest if not the largest component of an airline’s operating cost.”

Why airlines may not pass the full increase to passengers
Raising fares or adding a fuel charge can recover some higher costs, but it is a commercial decision, not an automatic pass-through. CRISIL Ratings says competition and passenger price sensitivity in India may limit airlines’ ability to raise fares while maintaining a balance between fares and passenger load factors. If higher prices make customers less likely to book, a carrier may have to weigh cost recovery against demand.
IndiGo made that trade-off explicit in a company release dated April 1, 2026. It said IATA’s monitor showed a regional month-on-month fuel-price increase of more than 130% and that Indian authorities would pass on only a partial, staggered 25% increase to airlines for domestic operations. IndiGo said fully offsetting the fuel-price increase would require substantial fare revisions, and that it was passing on a relatively smaller amount to customers. IndiGo’s April 1, 2026 announcement

IndiGo’s April 2026 fuel charges were a dated example
For new bookings from April 2, 2026, IndiGo announced domestic fuel charges by distance band and international charges by route group. The company presented the charges as a partial response to higher fuel costs, not a full offset. The announcement is a historical example, not a permanent fare rule or a current fare quote. Check the price and terms shown during booking for the trip you are considering.
