To track daily flows, use a clearly scoped table of U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs, such as Farside Investors’ U.S.-dollar flow table. A positive net flow means reported creations exceeded redemptions for the period; a negative net flow means redemptions exceeded creations. Neither figure, by itself, tells you where Bitcoin’s price is headed.

Where to find Bitcoin ETF flows

Farside Investors publishes a daily table for U.S. spot Bitcoin products, with amounts labeled in U.S. millions. It is a secondary compilation, not a consolidated report issued by the funds themselves. Before using a figure, check the table’s coverage, date, units, and any update or revision notes.

Scope matters: a U.S. spot ETF series is not the same as a global tally or a count that includes futures ETFs. Product rosters can change, so confirm which tickers are included rather than assuming the table covers every product currently listed. The Commoner’s tracker discusses coverage and data caveats, but it is also a secondary source.

Check the reporting time

Flow tables can update after the U.S. market close, and later disclosures may lead to revisions. When reporting or recording a latest-session total, note the page’s displayed date and time and whether the number is provisional or revised. An early reading should not be presented as the final daily figure.

Check units and aggregation

Read the table’s unit before comparing numbers. Farside’s amounts are in U.S. millions; a row may show an individual fund while a total aggregates funds for a session. Do not add rows to a published total without checking how the table defines that total.

What a net inflow or outflow measures

A net flow is the difference between fund creations and redemptions over a stated period. A positive figure means creations exceeded redemptions for the specified funds and reporting window. A negative figure means redemptions exceeded creations.

How creations and redemptions connect to Bitcoin

For the iShares Bitcoin Trust, its SEC filings describe cash-to-Bitcoin transactions associated with purchase orders and Bitcoin-to-cash transactions associated with redemption orders. That explains the mechanism for that trust; product structures and disclosures can differ, so do not assume every ETF operates identically. See the trust’s annual report and its prospectus amendment for issuer-level details.

A negative flow does not mean every shareholder sold, nor does it prove that a fund immediately sold Bitcoin on a public exchange. Fund orders, counterparties, settlement, and timing affect how redemptions are handled. Likewise, a fund-level total does not identify the people or institutions behind the activity. Calling a flow “institutional buying” requires evidence beyond the flow figure itself.

Flows are not NAV, assets under management, or price performance

Flows track net creation and redemption activity over a period. Net asset value (NAV) is the value of fund assets minus liabilities; assets under management (AUM) is the value of the assets being managed. NAV and AUM can rise when Bitcoin appreciates even if there are no net creations. Conversely, outflows can occur while AUM rises if asset-price gains outweigh the effect of redemptions.

For the iShares Bitcoin Trust, BlackRock says its administrator calculates NAV each business day after 4 p.m. ET, typically releases it after review by 5:30 p.m. ET, and generally does so no later than 8 p.m. ET. That schedule is specific to this trust; check each fund’s current documentation for its own calculation and publication practices. See BlackRock’s product information.

Bitcoin’s market price is another separate measure. ETF flows may contribute to demand, but they do not mechanically set the price. Exchanges, miners, and holders outside the funds also participate in price formation. Seeing flows and a price move in the same direction does not establish that the flows caused the move.

How to compare flow trackers or funds

Before comparing two figures, align the definitions and timing. A difference may come from coverage or reporting conventions rather than a change in underlying activity.

  • Geography and product type: Check whether the series covers U.S. spot products, global funds, futures products, or another universe.
  • Fund coverage: Check which tickers are included and whether the roster has changed.
  • Unit and valuation basis: Confirm whether the figures are in U.S. dollars, U.S. millions, or Bitcoin.
  • Period and timestamp: Establish the trade date, publication time, and whether the total is provisional or final.
  • Source and revisions: Distinguish issuer disclosures from third-party compilations and read the tracker’s revision policy.

For a fund-level comparison, keep creations and redemptions separate from NAV, AUM, and share-price performance. These figures answer different questions. If a product changes its basket method or disclosure practices, check its current filings rather than applying another fund’s mechanics to it. BlackRock’s fact sheet, for example, says that only registered broker-dealers that become authorized participants through a contract with the trust’s sponsor and trustee may purchase or redeem baskets; that is a statement about this trust, not a universal rule for every product. See the iShares Bitcoin Trust fact sheet.
