7-Eleven Denmark closed its stores on August 8, 2022, after a ransomware attack disabled its network and checkout systems. BleepingComputer reported that 175 stores were affected; the company later said they reopened after about 48 hours. Public reporting did not establish whether customer data was stolen.
What happened to 7-Eleven in Denmark?
On Monday, August 8, 2022, ransomware disrupted 7-Eleven Denmark’s network and store systems. The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) independently recorded that the chain’s Danish retail locations ceased operations that day because of ransomware: ENISA’s August 2022 supply-chain threat brief.
In a statement relayed by BleepingComputer, 7-Eleven described the incident this way: “This is a so-called ransomware attack, where the criminals have forced access to the network and locked the systems.” That is the company’s description reported by the publication, not a public forensic account of how the intrusion unfolded. BleepingComputer’s report covered the incident while it was ongoing.
How many stores closed, and what could customers do?
BleepingComputer reported that 175 stores closed. Cash registers were unavailable, and stores could not accept payment through their usual systems. Some locations resumed limited service using local arrangements, including cash or MobilePay, while the company worked to address the disruption. These workarounds did not mean normal checkout systems had been restored.

How long were the stores closed?
In an April 2023 retrospective, 7-Eleven Denmark said the attack temporarily closed every store in its chain and that stores reopened after approximately 48 hours. That is the company’s later estimate; contemporaneous reporting documented the closures and some stores’ use of local payment alternatives during the response. The company’s 2023 release also reported 2022 revenue above DKK 2.5 billion, but did not present that figure as the cost or financial loss from the cyberattack.
Was customer data stolen?
The public accounts cited here do not establish whether data was accessed or taken. BleepingComputer reported that 7-Eleven said there was no evidence at that point of an impact on customers, partners, or supplies, while the investigation was still ongoing. The company also said it would not provide further details about the investigation, its scope, or the consequences. A time-limited statement that no impact had been identified is not a final finding that no data was stolen.

Who carried out the attack?
The available accounts do not name an attacker or provide a final police or forensic report. BleepingComputer said no ransomware operation had claimed responsibility at the time of its report. 7-Eleven said it was cooperating with police but would not discuss further investigative details.
