Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd, the company that makes Rolls-Royce automobiles, is wholly owned by BMW Group. Its cars are designed and hand-built at the Goodwood facility in West Sussex, England. It is a different company from Rolls-Royce plc, the aerospace and power systems business.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd identifies itself as a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW Group. The car business is a separate legal entity; the Rolls-Royce name on a car does not mean Rolls-Royce plc owns or makes it. Are Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and Rolls-Royce plc the same company?
No. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd is the automobile company owned by BMW Group. Rolls-Royce plc is a separate aerospace and power systems business. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars issued an official clarification stating: “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BMW Group.” Rolls-Royce Motor Cars PressClub published the clarification following announcements by Rolls-Royce plc.
Where are Rolls-Royce cars made?
Current Rolls-Royce cars are designed and built by hand at the company’s Goodwood site in West Sussex, England, near Chichester. Rolls-Royce describes Goodwood as the only place where its motor cars are designed and built by hand. Its March 2025 craftsmanship press kit names Spectre, Cullinan, Ghost, Phantom and Coachbuild creations among the cars built there. The site is the production location; this does not mean every component originates there. The March 2025 press kit provides the dated model and manufacturing details.

How long does a car take to build?
In its March 2025 press kit, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars says, “It takes more than 600 hours to build a Rolls-Royce motor car.” This is the manufacturer’s stated figure, not an independent measurement, and it should not be taken to mean every model or bespoke configuration requires an identical amount of time. When did Rolls-Royce begin making cars at Goodwood?
The Goodwood-era operation began on 1 January 2003, when Rolls-Royce Motor Cars commenced business at the site. BMW Group had acquired the Rolls-Royce brand in July 1998 and planned a new British factory and a new car for the 2003 start. The first Phantom VII of the Goodwood era was handed to its owner on 1 January 2003. The company’s ownership information and heritage account describe the transition.

Which Rolls-Royce models are made at Goodwood?
The March 2025 press kit lists Spectre, Cullinan, Ghost, Phantom and Coachbuild creations as Goodwood-built. Older company information also names Wraith and Dawn, but that older list does not establish that either remains in current production. For a current model list, use dated manufacturer information rather than assuming an undated or historical lineup is still available.
