Jane Goodall (1934–2025) was a British ethologist and conservationist best known for her long-term study of wild chimpanzees at Gombe, Tanzania, which began in 1960. Her books are the easiest part of her legacy to buy today, and the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) sells a range of them through its official store. Her online learning courses are offered by the Institute, not taught personally by her, and a Jane Goodall Barbie was released as a limited edition in 2022 with no verified current availability.

Who Jane Goodall was

According to JGI’s biography of her, Goodall was an ethologist, conservationist, activist, author, and UN Messenger of Peace, and she founded the Jane Goodall Institute. She died in 2025, and the Institute continues the work she started. Her public role was unusual for a field scientist: she moved from academic research into advocacy in the 1980s and kept both roles for the rest of her life.

Her chimpanzee research at Gombe

Goodall began her study of wild chimpanzees at Gombe in 1960 under the mentorship of paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey. JGI describes it as the world’s longest-running wild chimpanzee study. Its best-known finding is that chimpanzees make and use tools. JGI says this observation changed scientific understanding of the relationship between humans and other animals, because tool use had been widely treated as a human trait.

The study also shaped Goodall’s later advocacy. JGI records her recollection of a 1980s conference on chimpanzees, which she described this way: “I went to that conference as a scientist, and I left as an activist.” The Institute attributes this reflection to Goodall as presented in its own account of the event.

The Institute and its programs

Goodall founded the first Jane Goodall Institute in the United States in 1977, according to JGI. She founded Roots & Shoots, its youth action program, in 1991. JGI’s current biography reports 30 offices worldwide and Roots & Shoots activity in 75 countries. These are the Institute’s own reported figures and have not been independently audited.

JGI’s current program areas include the Gombe Stream Research Center, community-led conservation in Africa, the Tchimpounga sanctuary, conservation science, and Roots & Shoots. Its program page describes work in animal welfare, habitat protection and restoration, community development, and youth empowerment. The Institute’s own description of Goodall’s legacy is captured in her widely quoted line from its biography: “We must remember that we are part of, and not apart from, the natural world, and we depend on it for clean air, water, food, clothing — everything.”

Jane Goodall books: which one to buy

JGI’s Books & Media page lists a catalog with titles for adults and children. The official store lists the items below. Prices and stock change, so the table records only what each title is suited for.

Title Best for Subject Format and listing notes
Me…Jane (Patrick McDonnell) Young readers and families Young Jane and her toy chimpanzee Jubilee Illustrated children’s hardcover, as listed in the JGI store; price and stock not stated
My Life with the Chimpanzees Children and young readers who want her life story Goodall’s autobiography and early years with chimpanzees Listed in JGI’s catalog and store; current price and stock not stated
The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times Adult readers interested in her outlook and activism Hope and practical action, written for adults Adult book listed in the JGI store; JGI says it has been translated into more than 20 languages
The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior Readers who want the science A synthesis of her long-term Gombe research Listed in JGI’s catalog; current price and stock not stated

For a first introduction, a children’s title is the simplest starting point. For her life story, the autobiography fits better. For the science itself, choose the Gombe synthesis. This is a sorting by audience and subject, not a ranking of quality.

The JGI store is the most direct source for what is currently sold. Browse it at Books & Media — Jane Goodall Institute Official Store, and check the Institute’s catalog at Books & Media — Jane Goodall Institute. The store also lists the documentary Jane Goodall: The Hope on DVD.

Online classes and courses

The Institute’s online Learning Center, at Inside JGI Learning Center — Jane Goodall Institute, offers courses and resources for conservationists, community leaders, and young people. Listed topics include project design and implementation, storytelling, media relations, Roots & Shoots training, and safeguarding training. The platform says learners can earn a certificate of completion for each completed course.

These courses are run by the Institute, not by Goodall personally. If you are looking for an introduction to her work rather than professional training, the books above are the more direct option.

The Jane Goodall Barbie

Mattel created a limited-edition Jane Goodall Barbie in 2022 as part of its Barbie Inspiring Women series, according to JGI Canada’s 2025 fact sheet timeline. That source confirms the release, not current stock, retail price, or resale value. No current authorized retailer listing was verified for this article, so treat any listing as unconfirmed until you see it on a seller’s own page.

Buying online without overpaying

Book prices and listings move, and collectible items carry a much wider price range than new books. Before you buy, work through these checks:

  • Start with the official store. It shows current listings for Institute-sold books and media, and it is the reference point for what is in stock.
  • Confirm the edition and format. A children’s hardcover and an adult paperback can carry similar titles, so match the listing to the reader you have in mind.
  • Compare the price with the official store before paying a premium. A marketplace listing above the store price is a reason to check the seller’s history, not an automatic bargain.
  • Treat the Barbie as a collectible. Check the seller’s return policy, look for clear photos of the packaging, and do not pay a resale premium based only on the 2022 release date.
  • Check the Learning Center before you enroll. Confirm the course details and certificate terms on the Institute’s own platform.

Prices and stock for every item in this article should be checked on the day of purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
