CVC Capital Partners is an investment firm that won the right to own and operate the Ahmedabad franchise in the Indian Premier League’s 2021 tender. That franchise is Gujarat Titans. In February 2025, Torrent Investments agreed to acquire a 67% stake in the team from Irelia Company Pte Ltd, an entity that CVC-managed or CVC-advised funds fully owned. CVC’s later case study describes Torrent Group as the majority shareholder, so CVC should not be described as the team’s current majority owner.

What CVC Capital Partners is

CVC Capital Partners is a private-equity and investment manager. Its name appears in this story because its funds held the Ahmedabad franchise after it was awarded in the IPL’s 2021 process. Its own Gujarat Titans case study mentions its earlier sports investments, including Moto GP and Formula One, and in the Torrent announcement, Managing Partner Nick Clarry said: “CVC has a long history of investment in sports since our investments in Moto GP and Formula One, and we are extremely proud of how this investment in Gujarat Titans has developed.”

How CVC won the Ahmedabad franchise

According to CVC’s Gujarat Titans case study, the IPL ran an open tender in 2021 to select two new franchisees. CVC won the right to own and operate the Ahmedabad-based franchise. The team is based in Gujarat, and the case study presents the franchise as the IPL’s entry from that city.

The reporting reviewed for this article does not give a verified purchase price for that award. Figures circulating in media coverage differ, so treat any specific number as unconfirmed unless it comes from BCCI or a transaction document.

Who owns Gujarat Titans now

The most recent source reviewed for this article, CVC’s case study, names Torrent Group as the majority shareholder. The 67% figure is the stake Torrent agreed to acquire in February 2025. The sources do not state the closing date, whether the deal’s completion changed any other holdings, or what stake, if any, CVC still holds. Those details should be confirmed against current company filings or BCCI records before you publish or rely on a specific percentage.

Keeping the terms straight

  • CVC Capital Partners is the investment firm that won the Ahmedabad franchise right in 2021.
  • Gujarat Titans is the IPL team that the Ahmedabad franchise became.
  • Torrent Investments Private Limited and Torrent Group are the buyer and the majority shareholder named in the 2025 transaction and the later case study.
  • Irelia Company Pte Ltd is the seller entity named in the announcement, which the announcement described as fully owned by CVC-managed or CVC-advised funds.

Readers searching for “who owns Gujarat Titans” or “who bought the Ahmedabad IPL team” should be given the 2025 Torrent transaction first, with CVC’s 2021 role explained as the origin of the franchise.

Sources and what is still open

This article draws on three sources: CVC’s Gujarat Titans case study, the Gujarat Titans announcement dated February 12, 2025, and The Indian Express report on BCCI approval. The sources do not establish the completion date, the final post-deal shareholding of every party, or a verified purchase price. Those are the points to check before reusing this information in a legal, tax, or investment context.
