Serena & Lily was founded in 2003 by Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter. Dugan brought a textile-design background; Kanter had opened the Mill Valley Baby & Kids store. Their first business focused on nursery and crib bedding.
How Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter met
Their partnership began at Kanter’s Mill Valley Baby & Kids store. Dugan had developed hand block-printed fabrics and accessories, selling them through interior designers and boutiques. She brought her design portfolio to the store in 2003, and the two decided to work together soon after meeting.
The accounts give different levels of detail about the timing: a later interview with Kanter says Dugan left her portfolio on October 2, 2003, and they met a week later; an Arizona State University W. What the co-founders brought to the company

What Serena & Lily started out selling
The company began with a design-led line of nursery and crib bedding. Kanter said the founders saw a gap in nursery products and shared a vision for the category. The pairing joined Dugan’s original textile designs with Kanter’s experience running a baby and kids store.
Serena & Lily initially grew as a wholesale brand. A 2015 profile of Kanter in Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey magazine reported that the company sold baby products through 600 specialty stores, including Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus, before launching its own website.
